I've heard this band. They're great, and I'd recommend a Cd of Janissary music as the perfect revenge for those folks who make too much noise when *you're* trying to sleep. Beside this, the original Janissaries had a great method of protesting poor food/pay. Since they were quartered in Topkapi Palace, right under the Sultan's nose, they'd overturn the hug kettles that their ratons were cooked in and their drummers would go to work, literally for hours or days at a time, until their demands were met. The Roman emperors had a similar problem with the Praetorian Guard, but without the music.

Apparently they had marching music which was fairly fearsome sounding with cymblas, horns and all. I found this advert for a sort of reenactment from 1999:

Perhaps an overview of the classes of instruments typically found in a band--brass, woodwinds, strings, percussion, etc. What does each contribute in tone and other qualities, what is the effect of combining them together in an ensemble?
