Why can't CD's end songs at the end?

Actually, I know what you're talking about, and it CAN be annoying. I usually only run into it on smaller label CDs or older ones, or even moreso on (how can I state this without sounding bad?) less professional releases.

My belief (from the grand experience of one digital recording session) is that it's almost entirely a function of the mixer/original recording, and nothing to do with the band. If the production crew isn't willing to take the time to fix mistakes (such as the aforementioned time problems, or other mix issues such as stereo dropouts, tone overbalances or the like), then there ain't much can be done.

But really, IS there a technoreason for this, anybody know? And am I really the only person to notice/be annoyed by this?

Or maybe I should ask, why can't they begin songs at the beginning? I'm ranting here about putting CDs you like on Random so you can listen to them endlessly, at which point each song ends in a snippet of the one before, and each begins in the middle of its first measure. I find, perhaps unfairly, that Shanachie is one of the worst offenders. Is there a technoreason for this? I can understand it if the 2 songs segue, that it would be impossible to "split" them nicely, or even some live versions. But here I am listening to a studio recording, with a nice few seconds between songs when playing through. So whyOwhy can't they use those seconds to split the tunes???? Rant on! Anybody else wanna complain?
