Thanks everybody!

Mr. Red, your post made me smile. I haven't lived anywhere longer than six years since I was a child, and my average time in any one place is about three years. Kind of pathetic, isn't it? I'd love to settle down some day, but it just doesn't seem to be in the stars for me just yet.

SharonA... wow, that must have been some move! Thanks for the tip.

Whatever you do, don't do what I did: DO NOT ask your songwriting friends to help you move, unless you want their future audiences to hear about your experience through the songs they write about it (and the "amusing" anecdotal introductions they make to their songs) !!!!! ):^\

If you haven't moved house in a while just remember that moving house is reckoned to be second only to bereavement in the upheaval it brings. All the routines, hiding places, smells, position of the sun, road noise etc etc are different and any one of them is trivial but all at once they intrude on your thought processes because of the strangeness. It sounds silly but be forewarned and forearmed. House is important but self is central to it.
Good Luck

Though I am seldomly at the mudcat these days because of my work schedule, I happened to notice your thread. It is a longer drive than you may want, but a lot of people live in south central PA which is quite rural, and commute to Baltimore regularly. Baltimore is about an hour and three quarters to two hours from Harrisburg.

There is a lot of nice countryside around Baltimore--a fair number of college towns, lots of forests and country side and so on--you can even live near or on the Chesapeake Bay--there are a a number of commuter train lines that run in and out of Baltimore, as well--affordability is a bit of problem, because the commuter lines go to where the commuters live, and houses in those areas are in demand--

The nice thing is that the suburban sprawl cuts off rather abruptly after you get a certain distance out--the bad thing is that the sprawl is creeping ever farther--

Having moved here recently (about 50 miles from Baltimore, and about 40 from Washington) I have had to look at the area from the same point of view as you have--PM me if you want--I'll look around for more info--

Good luck, Carol. Hope you can get treatments... though the lack of oxygen might be a problem in a city anyway.

Just make sure that you're at least forty miles away from Roger and Bill D and you'll be OK. *TEE HEE*

Carol, you might PM Roger in Baltimore and ask him. I'm nt sure he gets to the Mudcat that often so he might miss this one.

My son will be attending school in Baltimore in the fall. I'm thinking about moving closer to that area so I can see him from time to time.

I can't live in the city or even the suburbs because I can't tolerate the toxins in the air and water.

I'm looking for a smallish town within about forty miles of Baltimore that would have affordable housing. If there is some kind of public transportation between the town and Baltimore, and/or if there are any colleges nearby, that would be even better.

Do any 'Catters have any good information or advice for me?

Thanks in advance.

Carol
