Thanks Radriano. It was about the ship, then.

Cheers!

Subject: Lyr Add: CHAUNTICLEER (Sung by Forebitter)
From: radriano
Date: 12 Jul 01 - 11:31 AM

Doug Olsen of Oak, Ash, & Thorn was kind enough to send me the lyrics to this song which he got from an old Forebitter album. I'll post the melody once I've learned it correctly.

Chaunticleer
Sung by Forebitter

We pulled into port on Saturday morning
Chorus: Johnny get up let's go
With nine months pay we were ready for rolling
Chorus: Johnny get up let's go
And the New York women were ready for a week
Chorus: Johnny get up let's go
With our pockets full of money we hit the street
Chorus: Johnny get up let's go

Full chorus:
Johnny get up we miss you so
Johnny get up it's time to go
When your hard earned cash is gone
It's get out of here Johnny let Jack sit down

(And they said)
Where have you been my sailor honey
We missed your sweet lips and your money
Then round the town in a very fine fashion
They spent our money on our own sweet passion

Now me and the boys we was full of hell
And the tricks of the old trade we knew well
So we made a ready vow that before the end
We'd have a [mare?] house of sweet revenge

Then it's back to the house of 14th street
Where they offered us liquor and other fine treats
But me and the boys went light on the swill
Seeing to it that the women all drank their fill

Then down the stairs in the dead of the night
We left 'em breakfast in bed by the morning light
We filled their beds with the sailor's chowder
Seaweed, fish-heads, dust, gunpowder

We took all their gear and away we run
We was back on the ship by the morning sun
And we pulled out of port this Monday past
With their fine frilly underwear hangin' from the mast

So all you women that own the street
And who live the lives of the indiscreet
Take my warning and beware
Of the boys of the good ship Chaunticleer

Richard

"Bright chanticleer proclaims the dawn" is a song in C. Dibdin's play 'The Czar Peter'.

Chanticleer was the mythical fighting cock, right? Who dervished?

Right, neither of these songs is the one.

As I said, I can't remember any phrases from the song. I remember my brain thinking "great song!" and then so many other songs were sung that the memory of the lyrics faded into oblivion.

But wait! Oh grand El Swanno, heed my pleas and appear to us. Oh ye, who sang on the chorus and know some of the words, give us your wisdom.

Radriano

I don't think GUEST's post above or this one from contemplator merits the title Chanticleer. Without more information, I think we're just fishing in the dark. Is it about the US ship Chanticleer, for example?

Thanks
Ian

Subject: Lyr Add: THERE'S LONGING IN THE SEA
From: GUEST
Date: 10 Jul 01 - 12:31 PM

There's Longing in the Sea

There's longing in the sea and mountains grey,
There's longing too in silence and in song,
In murm'ring waters too on their endless way,
At sunset hours and firelight's flames among;
But fondest in the wind it makes its moan,
And saddest is the sedge the wind replies
Awaking echo's echo with its tone
And mem'ry's mem'ry in the hearts deep sighs.

And when one harkens to the chanticleer
And hand with eager song at break of day
Evoking answers upon answers clear
From nearby gardens, till from far away
At last songster lifts his voice on high,
With distance and longing in its cry.

Is this the song?

This is a sea song that "Oak, Ash, and Thorn" sang at the San Francisco shanty sing last Saturday. I can't recall any phrases from the song so I hope that someone out there will know the lyrics. Why perhaps even Oak, Ash, or Thorn will log on with the lyrics.

By the way, guys, sorry about the chicken sounds on "Chicken on a Raft" - I'm sure it had something to do with my foul upbringing.
