There is a very close relationship (variant perhaps) of this song made famous by Mississippi John Hurt....The tab and lyrics are HERE. Spaw |

Subject: Lyr Add: GOT NO SUGAR BABY NOW (Frank Proffitt) From: catspaw49 Date: 06 Sep 01 - 07:43 PM Got No Sugar Baby Now ....as sung by Frank Proffitt
Well, I've got no sugar baby now,
Well, I've drawed in my check,
Well, I've said all I can say,
Well, I've got no sugar baby now,
Got no use for a red rocking chair
I've done all I can do,
Lord I'm goin' where them chilly winds don't blow.
I've done all I can do, ********************************************************** Spaw

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Aint got no honey babe no more From: catspaw49 Date: 06 Sep 01 - 06:52 PM Frank Proffitt does this on the cassette tape available from Sandy at Folk-Legacy Records. I can think of no better authority than Sandy Paton, and I copy a portion of his liner notes here: Clarence Ashley had a song much like this one, which he called "Honey Babe Blues." Bascom Lamar Lunsford had it as "Red Apple Juice," and Charlie Monroe recorded it as "Red Rocking Chair." I have not found the song among other singers in Frank Proffitt's immediate area, although it has been widely collected in Appalachia. Recent recordings have made it quite well known in urban folksong circles. Sandy also tends to disallow a relationship speculated by others to Child 76, "The Lass of Roch Royal." Do you want the lyrics as per Frank Proffitt? Spaw |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Aint got no honey babe no more From: GUEST Date: 06 Sep 01 - 05:23 PM The JSD Band - thats it(I think)!! I checked out Red Apple Juice, Sorcha, but its still not he one thats currently driving me crazy. And I dont think its Red Rocking Chair either. There´s a verse that goes something like "Going where the water tastes like wine" which is repeated a few times. Maybe that helps. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Aint got no honey babe no more From: Dani Date: 06 Sep 01 - 04:26 PM Or is it "Red Rocking Chair", "and I ain't got no sugar baby now" I don't have even a second to look it up now, but didn't we just have a thread on Jimmie Rodgers? That might be it. Dani |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Aint got no honey babe no more From: john c Date: 06 Sep 01 - 01:34 PM Sorry Allan! Its not Rain and Snow - I know that one (and the words!) but the tune is pretty similar. Cant say that Hickory Wind sounds familiar, apart from an old Gram Parsons song. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Aint got no honey babe no more From: Allan C. Date: 06 Sep 01 - 01:24 PM My problem is that I have an unlabeled tape that has two different albums on it. Pentangle is one of them. (My other problem is that my memory is totally gone!) Now that I think of it, the line, "Ain't got not honey baby now" might come from "Red Apple Juice" by Hickory Wind. Does that ring a bell? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Aint got no honey babe no more From: Allan C. Date: 06 Sep 01 - 01:11 PM Well, thanks a lot, John! Now I have it stuck in my mind too! I think, though, that it may be from a Pentangle album. I can't recall the lyrics to "Rain and Snow", but I am guessing that it might be the cut that contains those words. |
