Well, I'm glad you explained yourself, Barry. When you said "gooney-bird," I thought you were talking about an airplane. Oh, so that's where the term came from.

Now, another term that has confused me is the "great speckled bird." My concordance leads me to Jeremiah 12:9. I looked that up in the King James Version and now I know:
Mine heritage is unto me as a speckled bird, the other birds round about are against her; Come ye, assemble all the beasts of the field, come to devour.
The more modern translations I'm used to translate it "vulture" or "bird of prey" and make the bird the aggressor, not the victim. Now that I know the context, the term makes sense.

White birds & doves & wings also appear in sea music, not part of this thread but I guess there's enough of a connection to throw these in. "If I Had The Wings Of A Gooney Bird", "Lord's Prayer" - Lord above send down a dove with wings as sharp as razors (origanially wings Tom Lewis changed it to beek), a West Indian rowing shanty that goes "white bird fly up, higher, black bird fly up to". Birds at sea was & still is considered a good sign went fish were around, ment you were close to shore (with the exception of the Albtross/Gooney Bird, which can go out to sea thousands of miles). There are earlier songs with the "Wings of a Dove" verse in them. It's something of a floater.

This is not the song you requested. But since you requested Wings of a Dove...

Wings of and White doves seem to be a popluar Bluegrass image.

White Dove by the Stanley Bros - Key of E

Verse 1:In the deep rolling hills of old Virginia
There's a place that I love so well
Where I spend many days of my childhood
In the cabin where we loved to dwell

Chorus: White dove will mourn in sorrow
The willows will hang their heads
I live my live in sorrow
Since mother and daddy are dead

Verse 2:We were all so happy there together
In our peaceful little country home
But the savior needs angels up in heaven
Now they sing around the great white throne
Chorus

Break
Verse 3:As the years roll by, I often wonder
Will we all be together someday
And each night as I wander through the graveyard
Darkness finds me where I kneel to pray
Chorus

WINGS OF A DOVE
Recorded by: Ferlin Husky
Written by: Bob Ferguson

CHORUS[D] On the wings of a snow white dove
He sent His [G] pure sweet love
A sign from a-[D] bove ...[A7]
On the wings of a [D] dove. [G]
[D] When trouble surrounds us; and evil [G] comes
The body grows [A7] weak; the spirit grows [D] numb [G]
[D] When [A7] these things be-[D] set us; He doesn't for-[G] get us
He sends down His [D] love; ...[A7] on the wings of a [D] dove.
CHORUS
When Noah had drifted; on the flood many days
He searched for land; in various ways
Troubles he had some; but wasn't forgotten
God sent him His love; on the wings of a dove.
CHORUS

Does anyone know the lyrics for "On the Wings of a (Snow-White) Dove"? I believe it was recorded by Roy Acuff. Thanks.

Chet W.
