I think it was Nanook of the North wasn't it? Complaining about his supper?

"Whale meat again..."

Shivers come from hearing it in my cradle in the war I think.

I still forget the long title of the great film. It is Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb (1964).

Dr S. is one of my all time favorites too. I've watched it uncountable times and I always end up in tears listening to that song at the end of the movie....the end of everything....

Just in case you decide to go out and buy the CD, the version used in the film was not her 1939 recording, but a recording made in 1954--the earlier hit did not feature a backing chorus--at any rate, Vera Lynn is wonderful--

Damn Doc....Ya' beat me to it! I always associate this song with Dr. Strangelove too. Great movie......Still love all of the Wellers characters and one of my favorite movie scenes of all time is Major Kong (Slim Pickens) riding the bomb down!

BTW, when the US celebrated the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII in 1995, Vera Lynn came to Washington DC to sing, "Bluebirds Over The White Cliffs Of Dover" again, for that celebration. (I don't know if she sang, "We'll Meet Again."

Poignant for families and friends at D day, still poignant today.

I always remember this playing at the end of Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove" as the Doomsday bombs were going off...probably has something to do with shivers up your spine. Of course, we're all much smarter now than we were in the 40s, or in the 60s....

Aloha,
Mark

Here is a link with the words and a wav file and some mor information.

We'll meet again,
Don't know where,
Don't know when,
But I know
We'll meet again
Some sunny day.

Keep smiling through
Just like you
Always do
Till the blue skies
Drive the dark clouds
Far away.

It always sends a shiver up my spine. More than ever this week.

check out this site, http://www.freezone.co.uk/tomfeise/455th/veralynn.htm

it says "Her most famous song must be "We'll meet again", which was written by Ross Parker and Hughie Charles in 1939 and sung in the movie of the same name, in which Vera starred in 1942."

Hope this gives you a place to start.

Not exactly a folk song, I know, but does anyone know who wrote the war-time Vera Lynn hit 'We'll Meet Again', or anything about the author (eg. was s/he in the forces, or a professional songwriter, etc.).
