Enjoyed the photos, pavane. Caused me to visit 45-year-old memories of riding a horse bareback at break-neck (or break-collarbone) speed. No feeling quite like it.

Congratulations to your daughter who will still cherish the experiences decades from now.

Oh, yes - relate to music - interesting to see Italian bagpipers *BG* ~;o)

A few years back at Sidmouth they had a team of flag-throwers from here at Sidmouth. Very spectacular.

We tend here to be too focused sometimes on the music and customs of English-speaking countries, which is a shame. Why you sometimes even get people blowing off about how this kind of thread doesn't belong here. Not worth taking any notice of them of course.

Thank you both for your support. MMario, the format varies from year to year, and this year, there was no traditional music at all! But going as an English team, we dressed in the costume parade as Morris dancers (which we are anyway) and performed The Nutting Girl jig at stopping points. In previous years, we have taken Welsh Clog dancers, and there have been folk dancers in various years from Austria, Italy, Hungary and Spain.

And since the event is, as stated, a four day festival which includes traditional music it certainly seems to fit the site!

Pavane - is there a particular type of music that is heard frequently at this event? or is it a mix of traditional stuff from various areas?

The Paliodonna web site is Here " but be warned, the English version is not yet up to date, and the language used is somewhat un-English in places! (The site seems very slow to load today.)

You can find one of the pictures painted for a previous Paliodonna at the artist's site Stefan Cannelli
These paintings are always done on cloth. If you look closely, you will see that this contains the coats of arms of the various cities taking part.

When we performed as a duo, we were representing Neath, in Wales, and therefore played a number of Welsh folk tunes, such as Ty Coch Caerdydd, Mwpmwy Porteynon, Pwt-ar-y-Bus, Galch Gwyn Morgannwg. As she does not know any Welsh songs, Dawne (my wife) sang some English ones, Lowlands of Holland, Sorry the Day I was Married, Gentleman Soldier, Nutting Girl.

The event itself sounds really interesting. Do you have any pictures of the art competition, esp.? Or, maybe there are some images online? My daughter is a horsewoman and I know would be interested in seeing/reading mreo about this event.

Oh, and making this even mre relevant, please tell us more about what songs/music you and your wife perform as "Pavane." Any choices esp. for this festival?

And we drove all the way through Europe (1200 miles) to get there, towing a caravan. (Raining all the way!). We didn't actually hear about the terrible events in USA until someone sent us a text message on the phone.

Just back from a trip to Italy, and I am pleased to report that my daughter Siân (age 16) won a bareback horse race, representing Coventry in the Paliodonna di Udine.

'Palio' races are bareback horse races held in Italy since medieval times. The Udine Palio, first
recorded in 1334, is unique in that it is for female jockeys. The race was revived in 1994 after a
lapse of about 300 years, and is held on the second weekend in September on a track erected
around a park in the town centre.

The event, stretching over 4 days, is a festival of food, arts, crafts and traditional music as well as horse racing.
My wife and I have performed as a folk duo ('Pavane' of course)in previous years.
There is an art competition featuring pictures on the theme of women and bareback riding.

Teams are invited to compete. There are three groups, one being the 'Borgos' or areas within
Udine. The second group comprises teams from other towns in Italy, and the third group are teams
from towns in other European countries.

There is a separate competition for each group, and a grand final for the winners of each group.
Unfortunately, there was a false start in the grand final, and my daughter fell and broke her collar bone, so she couldn't compete in that.
