Another discussion here with a link to the sheet music at Levy. The multiple names for this song make it difficult to find, either in the DT or the threads. No one's fault, just the way it is.

The song is best known by the title, "The Red and Green Signal Lights." It was written and copyrighted by Henry V. Neal and Gussie L. Davis in 1896 with the title "Just Set A Light."

could anyone please tell me if they remember an old railroadsong about an engineer who had to leave his sick child at home but when he was gonna ride by the house his wife was to hang a green light if things were okay and I believe a red light if not.
