Subject: Bluegrass box set From: Stewie Date: 14 Dec 01 - 08:17 PM This is simply a pointer to a recent box set on Proper Records: Various Artists 'Bluegrass Bonanza' (4CD, 99 tracks). Its title 'bluegrass' is drawing a very long and inaccurate bow indeed - but what a wonderful collection! The first disc is old-time string bands - Uncle Dave, Stonemans, Earl Johnson etc. The second is devoted to the Monroe Brothers. The third has Coon Creek Girls, Stanleys, Delmores etc and the fourth has mostly Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, Stanleys. I will not be purchasing it because I have about 98% of the tracks already, but it would be an excellent purchase for anyone who does not have this material. Judging from the ones I have, Proper box sets have excellent sound and are low-priced - for example, the Bob Wills one I recently purchased (also 4 CDs) was $A50 or about $US25. The track listing and notes for 'Bluegrass Bonanza' are available on the Proper Records site. Just select the 'box sets' link from the main page, scroll down to find the set and click 'more info': --Stewie. |
