Subject: RE: ADD Tune/Lyr Req: McAlpine's Fusiliers From: GUEST Date: 02 Jul 15 - 03:14 AM The similar line I heard was. Down the glen came Mc alpines men Just like the Bengal lancers One in ten was tradesmen The rest were fucking chancers. Also. Work for Mac and have the crack. |
Subject: RE: ADD Tune/Lyr Req: McAlpine's Fusiliers From: GUEST,alexdoc Date: 26 May 12 - 10:08 AM They were a breed apart those that worked with McAlpine. Hard working hard drinking men of steel. It saddens me to see the cemetarys full of those fusiliers now passed many of them like my father from the EmeraLD isle. God Bless them.....McAlpine yer a hard taskmaster>>> |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: mcalpines fussiliers From: Susanne (skw) Date: 25 Dec 01 - 05:04 PM This is what he says in a live recordidng taped from BFBS ages ago in the 'Eighties: 'Twas in the year of 'thirty-nine, when the sky was full of lead When Hitler was heading for Poland and Paddy, for Holyhead Come all you pincher laddies and you long-distance men Don't ever work for McAlpine, for Wimpey, or John Laing You'll stand behind a mixer and your skin is turned to tan And they'll say, Good on you, Paddy, with your boat-fare in your hand The craic was good in Cricklewood and they wouldn't leave the Crown With glasses flying and Biddy's crying 'cause Paddy was going to town Oh mother dear, I'm over here and I'm never coming back What keeps me here is the reek o' beer, the ladies and the craic I come from county Kerry, the land of eggs and bacon And if you think I'll eat your fish 'n' chips oh dear then you're mistaken |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: mcalpines fussiliers From: Brendy Date: 25 Dec 01 - 05:18 AM How're ye Jimmy, Fionn, and all the gang. My Father (now there was a man with a story or two!) did a stint over in London with Wimpey and the Green Murphy's, way back in those days. It was his favourite song, and one of the first that I learned as a child. Happy 25th December, everyone. B. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: mcalpines fussiliers From: Jimmy C Date: 24 Dec 01 - 10:30 AM Brendy, guests and all. Here is an additional verse we used to sing. I don't know if it was part of the original song or what ?. We would sing it as the second last verse.
And it came to pass we should go to mass |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: mcalpines fussiliers From: Snuffy Date: 23 Dec 01 - 06:46 PM You could very well be right, Murray. I've never done payroll in the building trade, just office staff, tv-repair technicians, factory hands etc. WassaiL! V |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: mcalpines fussiliers From: Murray MacLeod Date: 23 Dec 01 - 06:31 PM Snuffy, my recollection is that in the building trade there was also an additional card on which the employer had to affix holiday stamps? My memory is faint, it is a long long time since I was one of McAlpine's fusiliers. Murray |
Subject: Lyr credit: mcalpines fussiliers From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 23 Dec 01 - 05:54 PM Hi Brendy! I'm not at home so can't check the songbook, but I'm pretty sure Hilary is right about Dominic Behan. In which case, the DT really should be amended. I've heard the preamble much as Micca has it above. But I also heard him (Ronnie) do it as on an album recorded live (Major Minor label, or some such?) in the sixties. (This album was subsequently reissued, with "Off to Dublin in the green" unsubtly removed, and songs re-ordered to compensate. Quite a good way to mess up a live recording. Also the reissue came without sketches and rhyming penpictures of the band members, that graced the original.) Yet again it's one I've never converted from vinyl, but from memory the preamble on record was:
'Twas in the year of thirty-nine
For you stand behind the mixer (?),
Oh mother dear, I'm over here, |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: mcalpines fussiliers From: Snuffy Date: 23 Dec 01 - 05:21 PM To get your cards is to be fired. In Britain every worker had a National Insurance Card, which he handed to his new employer. Each week the employer had to buy a Social security stamp and stick it on the card. In about 1970, just before we went decimal, a stamp for a man was £1-0-1d. At the end of each year the employer got a new card for each employee and had to send the completed ones to the government. When you left, you got your Insurance Card back, stamped up to date, plus a Form P45 showing your Gross Pay and Tax Paid for the year. These were your "cards". WassaiL! V |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: mcalpines fussiliers From: Clifton53 Date: 23 Dec 01 - 04:45 PM I've always liked this song and have sung it for years as it is lively and lends itself to a rousing finish, but I've never known what 'got me cards' meant, something to do with the legality of working as an immigrant perhaps? Could someone clear it up for me? Thank You. Clifton |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: mcalpines fussiliers From: Micca Date: 23 Dec 01 - 09:22 AM If my memory serves me right,When I heard this in the 60's this had a (spoken )preamble that went something like this " Oh Mother dear,I'm Over here and I'm never coming back, for what keeps me here is the fags(cigarettes!!) and the beer but most of all the Craic, Have you ever been on the Great North Road When the moon was shining clear when youve got no gold and your hungry and cold and your DYING for a pint of beer The war was on in London and the Germans was overhead, so Paddy packed his suitcase and he WALKED to Holyhead¬ |
