Over a year after posting some incorrect lyrics and being corrected by the song's composer I offer my belated apologies for doing so.

I am very happy to now have the correct version.

When composers take a considerable time to get their lyrics right it must be very annoying to have oiks like me come along and incorrectly transcribe them. Though the words can be clearly heard on the recordings I have, Stephen Quigg's diction is excellent, the lines I got wrong just didn't make any sense to me. They do now. I was always a lover of the old vinyl lp which often included extensive sleeve notes, lyrics and words of explanation. Nowadays there are eithe no sleeve notes with downloads or you need a magnifying glass with CD booklets.

The Fishing Days can be accessed on Soundcloud from my album Old Hard Land, which has a selection of my own songs. I remember great nights playing in the Carbeth Inn (now sadly closed and for sale). Campbell

I had a pleasure to listen to Rannoch Duo in 1995, in the place called Carbeth Inn, where they were singing. Their concerts had quite unusual in that time audience - the group of Polish scouts (and I was one of them). And I still carry that music in my heart.
Unfortunately I have lost their tape before I had it digitalized. I would be grateful for any contact with a person who could help me in this subject.

Oh wait, no I am wrong- sorry.
We may still need to re-post a corrected Lyr ADD for this song, folks.

"'I see the Horse and Sammy...' - the Horse was the nickname of my Uncle Davy Edgar, who was engineer on the Storm Drift, and Sammy was Sammy Gemmell, the owner and skipper of the boat, which was based at Dunure, in Ayrshire." Campbell Gunn

Thanks very much for your post, Campbell Gunn. We are really happy here when we can be sure the lyrics are right! It would appear Ian Hendrie and michaelr posted the original lyrics then?

Wonderful song!

Maeve

As the author of the song, I can confirm that the line is "I see the Horse and Sammy..." - the Horse was the nickname of my Uncle Davy Edgar, who was engineer on the Storm Drift, and Sammy was Sammy Gemmell, the owner and skipper of the boat, which was based at Dunure, in Ayrshire. Campbell Gunn

These are the chords I use. I'm sticking with the horse at Skavaig. I recollect finding that the horse at Skavaig was as whirlpool but I can't be bothered re-researching it.

Capo 3 : G chords

I can see the [G]boats at Mallaig from [C]Lewis and the Clyde
Low down in the [G]water to the harbour with the [C]tide
I can [G]see the horse at Scavaig from the [C]'Stormdrift' at the dawn
With a hundred cran of [G]herring
But the [C]fishing [D]days are [G]gone

Chorus:
They [G]ploughed the sea and they [C]reaped the silver [G]corn
There were [C]hard days and [G]bitter ways to [C]greet the frosty [D]morn
They ploughed the [G]sea and they [C]reaped the silver [G]corn
They made [C]hard lives and [G]bitter wives
But the [C]fishing [D]days are [G]gone

Wrong lyrics

Rannoch which consisted of Campell Gunn & Heather O'Neill broke up in 1997 and I think over released 1 album

I can see the boats at Mallaig from Lewis and the Clyde
Low down in the water, to the harbour with the tide
I "can not sung* see 'The Horse' and Sammy from the
'Stormdrift' at the dawn
With a hundred cran of herring
But the fishing days are gone

chorus:

They ploughed the seas and they reaped the silver corn
There were hard days and bitter ways to greet the frosty morn
They ploughed the seas and they reaped the silver corn
They made, hard lives and bitter wives
But the fishing days are gone

As a boy I used to watch them, as they fished the Arran shore
On calm and peaceful summer nights and next day
home once more
But when winter winds were howling and the
world lay snug and warm
They were out there upon the ocean now the fishing days are gone

Repeat Chorus

Now the big ships sweep the seabed from Shetland down to Spain
The drifter and the ring net, we will never see again
The smoking sheds lie empty, the 'Stormdrift's'
days are done
The herring ships are over
And the fishing days are gone

Repeat Chorus

Thanks Ian Hendrie for posting the words. Reposting with a Lyr. Add tag for harvesting.

THE FISHING DAYS by Campbell Gunn was recorded by The McCalmans and Stephen Quigg.

I can see the boats at Mallaig from Lewis and the Clyde
Low down in the water to the harbour with the tide
I can see 'The Horse' at Scavaig from the 'Stormdrift' at the dawn
With a hundred cran of herring and the fishing days are gone

Chorus:
They ploughed the sea and they reaped the silver corn
There were hard days and bitter ways to greet the frosty dawn
They ploughed the sea and they reaped the silver corn
They made hard lives and bitter wives but the fishing days are gone

As a boy I used to watch them as they fished the Arran shore
On calm and peaceful summer nights then next day home once more
And when winter winds were howling and the world still and warm
They were out upon on the water; now the fishing days are gone

Now the big ships sweep the ocean from Shetland down to Spain
The drifter and the ring net we will never see again
The smoking sheds lie empty and the 'Stormdrift's' days are done
The herring ships are over and the fishing days are gone

Does some of it go:

Its 4 o'clock, and the wind is kinda hard today
But they go out anyway
Against the deck, the winds are blowing strong
The wives will have to pray

The daring ones will have to sail out to sea
risking their lives great and free

Its a song I have called 'A Fishing Day' which Mcginty from Halifax does on their Mcginty Live album.

Steve

I've heard a lovely song called'the Fishing Days' by a fella called Campbell Gunn who sings in the Park Bar in Glasgow. It's on a compilation CD from the bar, but deserves a bigger audience. anybody interested?
