Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old Joe's Place (parody from old SNL) From: Anne Lister Date: 29 Oct 07 - 04:40 AM There is a songbook for "A Mighty Wind" too ... we used "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" for our contribution to our wedding ceilidh, although I'm not sure a lot of the guests realised it was intentionally sickly sweet! Subject: Lyr Add: OLD JOE'S PLACE From: Jim Dixon Date: 28 Oct 07 - 11:24 PM I just ran across this old request from 1998, and was surprised to learn that some of the songs used in the 2003 film "A Mighty Wind" were much older than the film. In fact, there's a web site called SNL Transcripts that confirms that this songs was performed back in 1984! OLD JOE'S PLACE Written by Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer Performed by The Folksmen in "A Mighty Wind" 2003. 1. Whenever I'm out a-wanderin', chasin' a rainbow dream I often stop and think about a place I've never seen Where friendly folks can gather and raise the rafters high With songs and tales of yesteryear until they say goodbye! CHORUS 1: There's a puppy in the parlor and a skillet on the stove And a smelly old blanket that a Navajo wove. There's chicken on the table but you gotta say grace. There's always somethin' cookin' at Old Joe's Place. 2. Now, folks come 'round 'bout evenin' time soon as the sun goes down. Some drop in from right next door and some from out of town. CHORUS 2: There's a puppy in the parlor and a skillet on the stove And a smelly old blanket that a Navajo wove. There's popcorn in the popper and a porker in the pot. There's pie in the pantry and the coffee's always hot. There's chicken on the table but you gotta say grace. There's always somethin' cookin' at Old Joe's Place. 3. Now, they don't allow no frowns inside; just leave 'em by the door. There's apple brandy by the keg and sawdust on the floor. So, if you've got a hank'rin', I'll tell ya where to go: Just look for the busted neon sign that flashes: "Ea' a' Joe'!" CHORUS 3: There's a puppy in the parlor and a skillet on the stove, And a smelly old blanket that a Navajo wove. There's popcorn in the popper and a porker in the pot. There's pie in the pantry and the coffee's always hot. There's sausage in the morning and a party every night. There's a nurse on duty if you don't feel right. There's chicken on the table but you gotta say grace. There's always somethin' cookin' at Old Joe's Place! |

Subject: Lyr Req: Old Joe's Place (parody from old SNL) From: Chet W. Date: 13 Mar 98 - 06:19 PM Would anyone happened to have saved or remembered this; must have been about the mid-80's there was one night on Saturday Night Live a hilarious skit about the Folksmen, a parody of groups like the Kingston Trio, the Limeliters, etc., having a reunion concert. It was Christopher Guest and the other guys that later made the heavy metal parody Spinal Tap. The skit showed them rehearsing a song that went "Blood on the tracks, Blood in the mine, Brothers and sisters what a terrible time, Old 97 went in the wrong hole, now in mine number 60 there's blood on the coal..." Then they did a whole song as a performance on stage called "Old Joe's Place" about a friendly hangout of the same name where there's a "puppy in the parlor and skillet on the stove and a smelly old blanket that a Navajo wove...there's always something cooking at Old Joe's Place". I'd love to find the lyrics for Old Joe's Place. Sure would appreciate it. Thanks, Chet W. |
