The Tamils have been in Sri Lanka for many centuries but have always had strained relations with the Sinhalese and others. Many supported a nationalist party. Many emigrated.

It is unlikely that relations will improve for some years.

Unfortunately, it is now suffering from genocide.

And, of course, is barely under control now.

Sulloon (Ceylon) was under British control from 1815-1940's. Now, of course, Sri Lanka.

I thought it referred to an island that was home to a dour bar inhabited on Friday nights by pirates. The things one learns on Mudcat . . . .

I've heard this song since I was a youngster in Newfoundland.

Remember this is a song passed down mostly by the traditional oral method. I've always understood the words to be, "All from the Island of Ceylon" . I beleive the British Army was there during the 1800's. I always thought of it as a song coming out of the Halifax area. I can't remember where I got that notion though.
Regards,
MF

I've always assumed it means Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and I still do.

But just in case I entered the name intp a search engine, and came up with this, which is of cours totally irrelevant, but interesting enough - a page about a solar powered balloon project.

Ceylon! There was a mention of it in a thread a while back - I'll see if I can find it. Basically, there were Irish troops in one of the offshoots of Britain's wars in the Idian sub-continent.

Regards
