Can't you feel a little twinge of larangytis coming on for the weekend that "Pirate Invasion" happens to fall on, Mmario???

Might as well come visit us if you can't rehearse! ;D

True - Then I would get to see the Corsairs, and the Crimson Pirates, right? But if I get the cast spot for St. Bonaventure I will be in rehearsals - so I will probably be there Labor Day Weekend.

I'd highly recommend that you go to the MD Ren Fest during the weekend of September 21st & 22nd. That's what we lovingly refer to as Pirate Invasion Weekend during which the delightful village of Revel Grove is taken over by a marauding band of scurvy pirates. AARRGGHH!!

Nice to see a Thread on this.....I dont think there is much that equates to Ren Faires across here in the UK, though there is considerable Re-enactment stuff, as many of you may be aware (as well as a fair bit of 'Living History' stuff as an offshoot to that)

I love looking at Ren Faire pics & costumes though, cos my big interest at the moment (& for the last 4 years) has been 'Live Action Role-Play'...in a Fantasy (yes, vaguely 'Tolkein-esque'....) setting thats pretty much late Medieval/early Renaissance.

Thanks, guys, for explaining the website. They have a really good page for the Dickens Faire. I have also now discovered that if you go to "Event Reviews" and then to "Client List", you can see pictures of our Festival of the Sea in 1999. And they do have dates for the Novato Faire, as well as a picture. It's nice to know there will be at least one tree.

There is a Novato faire planned - they've been posting messages to various newsgroups. I don't exactly know WHY they've not made a separate site or at least updated their homepage (as they have for both the Dickensian event in San Francisco, and their other renfaire in Santa Barbara), but they haven't.

As to the site...

It's full of "mystery meat" links. Forgot about that. They've gradually improved it, but they're very fond of 'artistic vision' from what it seems. Hopefully they'll finally fix it so that they actually define what you're supposed to click on for what information. Oh well.

Chanteyranger - yes, that's the place the NorCal Faire has been held the last two or three years. Very dusty and windy...

I checked out the upcoming events listed on the site linked above, but found nothing about a Novato Faire.

The 'new' NorCal site is not AT the original Black Point site - that's now a golf course. The As You Like It faire is going to be a smaller event held at a park a few miles away. I don't THINK they've a website for the individual faire, but the event company that the Pattersons (son and daughter in law of the faire's creators) is at www.themeevents.com.

I hope they all have fun at Casa de Fruta--I'm going to have to miss it for the first time in 15 years. It's 140 miles for me, just too far to go for 6 weekends. The Pattersons are having one in Novato in August.

Well, that at least explains that angle...

The Black Point/Nut Tree/Casa De Fruita faire is the RPFN, sister faire of RPFS, both started by the Patterson family who originated the 'Renaissance Faire' as it is seen in America today. There's a weird tug of war that's gradually being lost over the years to try to keep the emphasis of the faire more firmly anchored in history.

The guitar issue is just one that's stuck around for years. Originally it was a major element of an overall policy that included all workers (performers AND vendors) going through a lengthy rehearsal and workshop program, universal costume approval, insistence upon as few anachronisms as a vendor as possible, required use of 'Basic Faire Accent' and a host of other elements that really aren't as prevalent at any faire today.

Most groups performing at the CA big faires still try to make some sort of a nod towards period appearances. My former group had one guy with a "luitar". Basically just an acoustic bowlback guitar with as little 'modern' hardware as possible. That's usually what they look for.

I believe they're still sticklers on the acoustic guitar issue though.

The rummelpot is the "drum" known to Latin percussionists as a guica (or cuica). A very cool cound!

The faire that turned me down for not being historically accurate as a guitarist was the Northern CA one (in Novato at the time, now sadly relocated to a dismal dust bowl known as The Nut Tree).

Cheers,
Michael

East Bay Express Article about Re-enactors:

http://www.eastbayexpress.com/issues/2002-04-17/feature.html/1/index.html

Reenacting is a hobby. Why do I do it?, because, like any hobby, It's Fun!! And, like most hobbies, it can get to be expensive. Rigging up for my 1812 group will cost ~$200-300 for a basic rig. I don't want to think how mush I've spent at Townsend, a leading vendor or "sutler" of 18 and 19th century clothing and goods

"Rennie" is from "Renaissance." I guess there are probably different nicknames for difference kinds or re-enactors. Sean & chanteyranger--the rumblepot guy is Kenny Milligan--hasn't been around for a while. As for his sense of humor, a friend of mine used to date him (!) This probably says a lot about HER sense of humor, but she was disappointed to find him not very funny in person. I think it's possible that he takes his "dead cat" songs seriously.

By the way, for you Bay Area types, there's a very interesting article in the April 17 East Bay Express about re-enactors who play Waffen-SS in WWII battles. Does anybody know if the Express is online?

I'll bet your "fart drum" is actually a rommelpot. A skin stretched over a drum frame, in the center of which is a rosined string or stick. Said string or stick being pulled in order to create the "rumble" Look here for more. Yes?

Celtic Soul, if you're on the West coast, USA you can still see them live. Or barely alive, depending on what they put in those tankards backstage. Next best thing is to get their newly produced live CD. It celebrates 21 years together and is titled "Old Enough To Drink." Wonderful stuff!

I've never played at a faire, but looove to go to the Texas Renaissance Faire every year. It's a beautiful site, permanent and all, with acres and acres of trees with buildings that were built in a style reminiscent of the period.

I have to wait 'til October, though...

I remember that guy with the "fart drum," SeanM! I think he called it a "Rumblepot" or something like that. Melani would know. She's a longtime and current Faire vendor, a fine leatherworker. As funny as that guy is, I've been told when out of character he has no sense of humor! I'm a former Rennie, having played fiddle in Irish and Scottish dance shows at N. Calif. faires 1986-87.

Oh... and now for the Shameless Plug (tm)...

We just found out our showtimes for the upcoming Renaissance Pleasure Faire, South in sunny Devore, CA (near San Bernardino). We'll be on the Rogue's Reef stage four times daily, at 10:30, 12:30, 2:30 & 5:30. The faire itself opens May 4th, and runs seven weekends plus Memorial day through June 16th. Info can be found on www.recfair.com. We'll have our new CD (YAY!) by opening weekend... along with a show with a lot of new material. It should be pretty fun. I'll be the tall long haired bass WITHOUT the beard.

Plug plug plug!

We now return you to the thread in progress...

Dave Swan is a member of Oak, Ash & Thorn, one of the earlier renfaire groups from the original faires in CA. Absolutely wonderful group, and I'm not remotely above plugging 'em.

Chip - what faires are you near? To be honest, there's a VERY wide variety of what you can do at a faire - so long as you've the confidence, you can find a group that can accomodate your talents.

Heck, there's a guy still working for the Patterson family company up in Northern CA whose most remembered gig was sitting under a tree with a 'fart drum' (heck if I remember the name, but that's how it sounds) singing really horrible songs about his pig. Absolutely hilarious.

Locally we have 3 that are within easy driving distance and a few more that would make good weekend trips. Depending on the big ugly green money monster I should hit 7 or 8 weekends this season.

I enjoy ATTENDING the Maryland Renaissance Faire. I especially enjoy Pyrates Weekend (As CS can attest to)

Anyone going to a RenFaire and hoping for Historical Accuracy will be sadly upset. Folks are there to have FUN. You want button-pissing, go to an ACW encampment. I am a reenactor Nautical Living History Interpreter. My period is from early 18th to 19th Century. (my wife thinks it's funny to hear a guy talking about his period.) I do common sailor to privateer to pirate, errr... I mean "Nautical Property Reassignment Specialist" At MDRF I do a Wizard when not a pirate.

I first came to the MDRF to listen to madrigals, having been in a madrigal group in high school. Larksong performed, and the audience clapped quite politely. Then I went to the White Hart Tavern, where this bunch of guys (and 3 girls) were dressed up like pirates, and singing with raucous abandon! The crowd was CRAZY. They knew all the Lyrics, and sometimes outshouted the Pyrates! I was hooked. I bought their CD's and listened to one on the way home. It was a live recording, made at my favorite Restaurant! I went to their website, saw that some of them participated in a chantey sing, again at the same restaurant. I went, and as they say, the rest is (living) history.

Mmario! How wonderful about Vermont...break a leg, darlin'!!

Sean and I have chatted...I've heard lots of good things about the Boggards.

And Michael? What Faire did you audition for??? I have no idea why any Faire would discourage a Guitarist. I've seen all sorts, and they add so much to the feel. There's nothing like a wandering minstrel to really put you in the right frame of mind. If it's a problem with the instrument, there *are* some alternatives. John Durant plays an instrument that, for all intents and purposes, looks just like a lute, but is strung like a guitar. I have no idea what to call the thing (someone here will know, I have no doubt). It's a lot quieter than a guitar, but he says it passes for "looking historical". Maybe that might help?

You know about me! *grin* Hey - I haven't told you - I got a gig with Vermont Ren-faire, so I will be there the first three weekends in june - as a strolling minstrel. Then Sterling for the season as a gamer.

There are a number of patrons that I know come here, I've bumped into several at various faires. BillD's son Shadowmonk attends MD when he can, I know.

SeanM is a Poxy Boggard, I *think* Dave Swan used to play faire, and several others have mentioned faire.

Guinesschik and Jed Marum told me they know a lot of people at Scarborough.
