Weerover
Both books are reasonably available. John Moulden of Ulstersongs (you can contact him through the Links page)will certainly have Sam Henry for sale.

Having only recently discovered this forum I found this thread when looking through old stuff and am very interested. Anyone know whether any of the other major collections is available (Henry's "Songs of the People", O'Lochlainn's [spelling?] "Street Ballads"?]

Thanks Ronan - the book is excellent. The problem with the link seems to depend on the browser used.

I've checked the link above (in the first message) and it does work. Anyone looking for Zimmermann's book should go to www.four-courts-press.ie

Martin

Thanks. I've updated the entry and added your comments etc. to my version of the Countries/Ireland section of the Basic Folk Library. It may take a week or two to get into the PermaThread, though.

Cheers!
Ian

Masato

I missed out on a copy of "The Ulster Harmonist" last week! The only consolation is that it went to the Irish Traditional Music Archive - so I can get at it anyway.

Regards

I can get to the site with internet explorer, but not with my preferred Netscape (my local server also uses an older version of Netscape).

The link will only work in recent iterations of browsers supporting .xml, it seems. That's a bad mistake on the part of the publisher (or rather, their web designer, who is perhaps going for "cool" at the expense of wider functionality). That said, thanks for the heads-up on the reissue.

Good news. I've posted some songs from that book. Orange songs (only a selection, though) are included in Part 3: "The songs of the 'loyal' party".

Thanks, MartinRyan. Excellent. (Clickie worked for me too.) / As for the Orange songs: perhaps theirs was---and especially now, IS---rebellion too, arguably; though of a different sort, for a very different cause.

Many thanks. The clickie worked for me. I've been searching the internet booksellers, without luck, for years trying to find a copy.

Georges Zimmerman, a Swiss professor, published a book in 1965 called "Irish Political Street Ballads and rebel Songs 1780-1900". It was subsequently published in Ireland and USA as "Songs of Irish Rebellion", with the original as subtitle (bit of a misnomer, really, since it includes Orange songs). Long out of print, it has just been reprinted in a good quality paperback format, with a new foreword by the author. Click here for details

Although written for an academic audience originally, it's a fascinating book with a great collection of songs, many with tunes. It's essential reading for anyone with a serious interest in the connections between Irish song and Irish politics. Buy it!

Regards
