It's reported by Associated Press that Yaffa Yarkoni, who has sung songs glorifying Israeli soldiers since 1948, is now subject to death threats and the cancellation of a gala tribute to her lifelong career, because she had the temerity to question the current siege of Palestian territory. It seems her comments were innocuous enough, 'We are a people that lived through the Holocaust. How can we be capable of such things?' - in reference to the writing of numbers on the arms of Palestinian detainees by Israeli soldiers. A reasonable question, I think. She is now being branded a traitor, and worse. I support her right and responsibility to speak out in any way she feels, and if SHE cannot do so safely, who can? It does bring up the question of her being bitten by the sentiments that she herself has helped stir up over the years, with her pro-Israeli soldier songs, performing every Memorial Day in honor of the Israeli's fallen. On a side note, it points out that words have power, that songs should be carefully written to say what one needs to say, & not used to fuel political causes. Shalom to her.
