Subject: RE: where do you folkies go? From: Ebbie Date: 16 Jul 02 - 10:41 PM Hmmmmm. There is a lot of music available in this small city and there are always several options open. However, in the last few years my routine hasn't varied much: Sunday afternoon a friend and I get together while he's learning more mandolin, Monday noon (MandoMonday, when 5 or 6 people come to play during their lunch hour)Wednesday night, a jam for about 8 of us, Thursday night when we play for a dance (don't do it every week anymore), Friday night for a full scale jam (a dozen or so people) at my place and once a month a singing group gets together on Saturday night. There's also the odd impromptu opportunity to play at a local nursing home and Pioneers Home. But it's ALL fun and rewarding. I can't understand why I spent so many years doing without it. |

Subject: RE: where do you folkies go? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 16 Jul 02 - 09:37 PM Thursday nights find my bodhran-beating wife and and my guitar/banjo-picking self at a session at a local "Irish Pub" (or what masquerades as one in the States). We usually have 10-12 people show up: 3-4 fiddlers, concertina, button accordian, bouzouki, mandolin, more guitars, more bodhrans, flutes & whistles. We stick pretty much with trad Celtic instrumentals though a few old-time and swing tunes have been known to sneak in when nobody's looking. It's always a hoot. We also exhibit our pottery at a monthly "Art Market" to benefit a local arts center which provides art instruction to (mostly) under-priveleged children. We usually have at least one session there to provide free entertainment for the artists and visitors. It's an "anything can happen and probably will" type of jam session. Celtic, blues, bluegrass, jazz, folk-rock, swing, native American flutes, drum jams: you name it - it happens. It is also a hoot. Other than that... the occasional paying gig, the occasional festival and a lot of playing for the walls. Bruce |
