Subject: Chas.Burton-Tell us about his expedition From: Art Thieme Date: 19 Jul 02 - 12:17 AM Charles Burton--59--died this week. He was a member of an expedition that circumnavigated the world from pole to pole in 1979----a line that went through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich to the North and South Poles. Apparently from Great Britain, Prince Charles said of them, some years ago, "They were refreshingly mad!" Led by Sir Ranulph Fiennes, they had some strange adventures with bears and other problematic denizens of the colder climes. I know about Scott and Shackelton and Amundsen----but who were these guys!!?????????? It's a part of history that eluded me. Art Thieme |
