One of the things that ticks me off about Don, is that he's all self taught!

I hate him for that!

LOL!!!

Rick... I think the last time Windsor Folk brought Don through was before I'd moved here... I have seen him play at the folk club in The Soo (Blackfly Jam) though... and man oh nuts! I came home and apologized to my guitar...

I've also heard Don slagging file sharing, but I wanna ask him, does he not think he's maybe reaching a wider audience with file sharing than without... I know I've turned about 8 or 10 people on to him, by sending them an mp3 or 2 of his... They have later gone out and bought the CDs...

I have him on video tape from a show called Listen Up, and have had a really good, slow look at his playing.. and well, I might be talking through my hole, but I -think- I could do that...

It certainly can't hurt to try eh!

;-)

Given his famous (or infamous) comments on Napster, it never occurred to me to look for Don Ross MP3's on the net, so I'd heard of him, but never heard him--it was a mistake on my part, because he very generously provides files from each of his albums here Don Ross's Website, as well as info on his many tunings, and, if one wishes, the opportunity to order printed music of his compositions--

Anyway, I liked his playing and thought his compositions were well written. tight, and punchy, and I really liked the sense of beat that he has, has a real strong Rock/R&B feel to it--

As to playing his stuff, those tabs and tunings aren't going to be enough, you could play what he is playing, note for note, and still not have it--most important thing is probably going to be (as it is with most Rock/R&B stuff) to get the basic feel first, playing simple bass lines and melodic figures, and getting that down before actually trying to work out one of his pieces--

I think it is well worth learning to do his kind of stuff, at least for solo acoustic guitarists, because he is playing a creative, progressive, kind of music that comes out of rock and folk rather that strictly jazz--

Hi Clinton. The Windsor Folk Music Society must have had Don there a time or two, because on both occasions that I've done concerts there, folks have asked if I could play something of his. They seem to know his tunings as well.

A few years ago at a Mariposa Guitar workshop he said something that left a few folks with their mouths open. An audience member asked how much each of the participants practiced daily....Most of us said "an hour or two"...Don said something like "eight to ten hours"! Shit, no wonder he's that good!

Cheers

Rick

I've seen Don Ross perform a number of times...all at Blue Skies Music Festival which just happens to be coming up during the 1st weekend in August. He'll probably be there this year either doing a workshop or just as a festival goer. The festival is held on land owned by Oskar Graf ( Click Here )who has made at least one of Don's guitars. If Don's there, I'll ask if there is a good source for tab. Personally, I've never tried playing any of his stuff since it's always seemed a bit beyond my fingerpicking abilities (I'm more a flatpicker) but maybe it's time I tried.

Clinton,

I have some but as I'm in the middle of renovating, it'll be hard to find at the moment. PM me and Ill be glad to snail mail you what I've got. Don himself has handed out tabs during his workshops and has a contact who does the actual transcriptions for him. Try to catch a workshop (I attended one a few months ago in Guelph) if you can, you won't be disappointed.

Mooh.
