Subject: Lyr Add: THE RUM AND RASPBERRY From: Bob Bolton Date: 31 Jul 02 - 06:02 AM G'day again,
Well, it's obvious I have not listened to this for some time! It was on a Wongawilli cassette I bought about 12 years ago and, although it is on the Musica Pangaea compilation, in their Undiscovered Australia series ... and on a new compilation CD from Wongawilli called After the Tradition, that they just gave me for review ... I have a sufficiently faint recall of the actual words to miss the fact that the very first word in the title is different ... good working bushman's rum ... not your effete Kiwi's gin! As well, there are a lot of changes, in locale, mostly, taking it to the Kiandra Gold Rush of the early 1860s. (BTW: Does anyone have an accurate date for Martin Curtis's composition? This adaptation was, apparently, collected at Australian National Folk Festival - held in Maleny in 1989. Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Gin and Raspberry From: Peter Kasin Date: 31 Jul 02 - 04:32 AM I second the commotion on Out Of The Rain's singing of this on their tape Song Of The Wage Slave. It's a keeper. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Gin and Raspberry From: Bob Bolton Date: 30 Jul 02 - 11:48 PM G'day Kat, As Dick Greenhaus remarks, Wongawilli Bush Band also do the song. (I presume that is on their CD released by Musica Pangaea.) I can't see anything in either mousethief or Radiano's word's that looks very different from their version ... but, I'll listen when I get home, and if there is any difference I'll note it. Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE GIN AND RASPBERRY (Martin Curtis) From: radriano Date: 30 Jul 02 - 07:55 PM Hi katlaughing, Here you are: THE GIN AND RASPBERRY Written by Martin Curtis While hunting for Fox we first came this way From Lake Pembrook township took many long days We cut through the bush and we found a new rush With a mine called the Gin and Raspberry Chorus: Oh, but it's hard, cruel and cold Searching Cardrona for nuggets of gold An ounce to the bucket and we'll all sell our soul For a taste of the gin and raspberry The rumors went out and the thousands poured in A handful grew rich but many grew thin They all hoped to find their own patch of tin As rich as the Gin and Raspberry At first it was summer and we all thought it grand No shirts on our back as we sluiced and we panned But then came the snow and the southern wind's blow And there's ice in the Gin and Raspberry Now Billy McGraw he worked hard and worked long Ready to smile and to give us a song But then he struck gold and was found dead and cold Down in the Gin and Raspberry So I'll work at the mine and I'll stay out of strife I'll save all me tin to send home to me wife And when the job's done I'll be home at a run And to hell with the Gin and Raspberry I have lyric sheets for all of our recordings. PM me with your e-mail address and I'll send you one. Just let me know what format you need - the file is in MS Word now but I can easily save it as a MAC file for you. Richard |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE GIN AND RASPBERRY (Martin Curtis) From: mousethief Date: 30 Jul 02 - 07:52 PM Bok Muir and Trickett sing this. It was written by New Zealander Martin Curtis. CHords can be found on this website: http://folksong.org.nz/ginrasp/index.html The lyrics are as follows:
THE GIN AND RASPBERRY
While hunting for Fox, we first came this way
Chorus
The rumours went out and the thousands poured in
At first it was summer, and we all thought it grand
(Young) Billy McGrath, he worked hard and worked long
So I'll work out my time and I'll stay out of strife Come and drink up your Gin and Raspberry. ------------------------------------- Alex |
