Subject: RE: Need Info on the S.S. Stephen Hopkins From: Gareth Date: 05 Aug 02 - 05:07 PM Page here containing the citations of US of A merchant marine gallantry awards, in alphabetical order, including those awarded to the crew of the "Stephen Hopkins", well worth reading to remind us all, on all sides of the water, of the sacrifices and gallantry displayed. Blicky Here The "Stephen Hopkins" Chapter of the Veterens of the American Merchant Marine. Blicky Here The citation of the "Stephen Hopkins" as a 'Gallant' ship. Blicky Here General page of history and tribute to the American Merchant Marine Blicky Here I suspect that you will have had these previously, but they make fasinating reading, other catters may appreciate them too. Subject: RE: Need Info on the S.S. Stephen Hopkins From: artbrooks Date: 04 Aug 02 - 11:44 PM Some information comes up on an Altavista search on "Edwin O'Hara". There is some information here, towards the bottom of the article: http://www.armed-guard.com/ag77.html, and here: http://www.merchant-marine.com/only_once.htm. This one says Cadet O'Hara received a postumous medal:http://www.usswashington.com/dl27se42.htm. |

Those associated with the Jeromehah O'Brian(?) restoration might be helpful. I've been working from the same page as you, apparently, for years. Subject: Need Info on the S.S. Stephen Hopkins From: Bilge Rat Date: 04 Aug 02 - 07:21 PM I'm working on a song about the American Liberty Ship 'Stephen Hopkins'' battle with the German raider 'Stier' in the South Atlantic on 27 September, 1942. I've been able to get some material off the Web, and leads here on Mudcat, but not enough details to make the song whole. If anyone has more information and leads (especially about Merchant Marine Academy Cadet Edwin O'Hara, who took over the 'Hopkins'' 4-inch gun after the Naval Armed Guard gun crew had been wiped out; and loaded, aimed, and fired the last five shells from the ready box into the 'Stier'), I'd appreciate it. |
