I have to assume that (10) was "Under the Greenwood Tree".

Sorry it was (5) I thought was mallow - I never worked out 10 either.

I'd managed to get
(2) Orange Blossom Special
(3) Hackberry Ramblers
(4) Nutting
(6) Ram
(7) Oranges and Lemons
(8) Manchester
(9) Hard Times
(11) Lagan
(12) Long Lankin

Stumped by (1) which had to be a J and (10) I first thought of Mallow, but I assume now that the town was Fermoy - although I still don't know the tune.
I must admit I was trying to think of a more universally known author.

Congratulations, Moleskin Joe. The answer is indeed John from Hull, our very own Mudcat faux-naif. The prize will be yours, Joe if you PM me your address. Or if you're not a member, you'll have to post the address here for any Tom Dick or Harry to read.

I think that was a bit unfair describing John from Hull as famous although I might go along with infamous.

'Girls' in a fiddle tune title can be 'lasses'.

Find a map and look along the Blackwater. But you'll need to know your fiddle tunes.

I guess I have the first name and the first letter of the last name (starting like a famous American president) but that doesn't help me.

The only answer that I can come up with for (5) doesn't seem to fit - and it's disolute fellows that it refers to not girls.

First letters of answers spell out a famous and well-loved humorous writer. First posting to this thread identifying this great man wins a fabulous prize.Don't bother giving answers to individual questions.

(1) Daddy Rice wheeled and turned.
(2) Rouse's famous fiddle tune.
(3) Luderin Darbone's group
(4) Where did the girl go who lived down in Kent?
(5) Blackwater-side Co Cork town, whose girls inspired a famous reel.
(6) Infeasibly large animal, shared a home with Pretty Peggy.
(7) St Clement sang about them.
(8) A freeman on Sunday, where did he go back to on Monday?
(9) Bob and co sang about them in England, Stephen in American hoped they wouldnt come again
(10) Pleasant sylvan location, hymned by Amiens and Hardy.
(11) Whose streams sang lullaby?
(12) He lived on the moss.

Some questions are a little ambiguous, to avoid making this too easy. OK, go to it, the clock is ticking.
