Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: Helen Date: 09 Oct 02 - 09:13 PM Phew!! Thanks catsPHiddle! I'll definitely volunteer next year to coordinate it. It's just that this year I have more than twice my usual number of TAFE (adult/vocational education institute in Oz) classes for the next few weeks. Burke was my Secret Santa and she sent me two parcels - the local content was yummy maple syrup and maple sugar and some very yummy chocolate/toffee bones. Her personal content was a CD and book of Sacred Harp singing, with Burke singing on one (or more?) of the tracks. Lovely. Helen |

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: Gloredhel Date: 09 Oct 02 - 07:46 PM Hi SharonA! You were a great Santa last year. Yes, the idea of sending postcards with commentary on the back was a stroke of brilliance on your part, and I wish I'd done it. So future Santas--take note! |

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: Kim C Date: 09 Oct 02 - 01:29 PM Cat, I have sent you my pertinent information. I, too, must brag on my Santa from last year. Mrrzy sent me a fantastic CD & cookbook set - The Food & Music of Spain. I have had great fun with it! :-) I was most amazed that someone I never met in person, could pick out something so very appropriate. |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: MMario Date: 09 Oct 02 - 01:04 PM yupperrs - lets get this in the works - (and then we can load morty down with gifts to carry back and distribute....snicker) |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: Burke Date: 09 Oct 02 - 01:01 PM I got the best gift last year! It was the result of an off the cuff comment in my hints that I promptly forgot about. It still puts me in tears. Getting my Santee's gift together really helped put me in the Holiday Spirit. Count me in again. |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Oct 02 - 12:54 PM Hey...It was fun wasn't it? I got a great book and some cute stuff from my Santa across the pond and had a good time getting my Santee a gift that he had mentioned in the threads long before and then forgotten.....so it was a fun time. Cats, if you're willing, start a BOLD Secret Santa Sign-Up thread and let's gey moving because Helen is right about Oz and even mine fro the UK took an extra long time....So let's get going now!!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: Catherine Jayne Date: 09 Oct 02 - 12:37 PM Helen said she would be busy at work so I will volunteer!! If you want to take part just PM me and I will organise it. Let me know which country you are in and if you would prefer to send a pressie to someone in the same country as you. I think the limit should be $20/£15 ish like last year. cat |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 09 Oct 02 - 12:36 PM This does sound interesting. Send me a PM when whoever organizes it decides to organize it. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: SharonA Date: 09 Oct 02 - 12:25 PM Open Mike: I think last year's limit was $20. The emphasis last year was on giving a present (or a little something included with the present) that reflects the Secret Santa's hometown or area, so it became something of a cultural exchange as well as a present exchange! For my part, I tucked in some postcards of what I thought was interesting about the part of the Philadelphia PA suburbs in which I live, with commentary on the back of the cards. I remember someone sending a T-shirt with a local-interest logo, and wasn't there someone else who sent interesting local stones to a Santee who collects them? |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: SharonA Date: 09 Oct 02 - 11:58 AM What happens next: we wait till someone (Helen or whoever decides to be the coordinator) tells us to send Private Messages to him or her, giving our mailing addresses and whatever other info the coordinator may request, such as an email address or phone number for the coordinator's use only. This is the time to request the location of your Santee if you have a preference. Whether you can ask to have a particular person for your Santee is up to the coordinator, I'd imagine. Personally, I'd rather be surprised by the coordinator's choice. Then the coordinator picks the Santee for each Secret Santa, and sends a Private Message to each Secret Santa with his/her Santee's address and the deadline by which packages must be mailed to the Santee's country in order to arrive by Christmas. And then the hinting begins! |

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: open mike Date: 09 Oct 02 - 11:49 AM yes, I'd like to participate...sounds like fun... it reminds me of a family tradition that we used to have--when we got together at thanksgiving in november, we would put names in a hat for a gift exchange which would happen in December. that way every one got a present, and you didn't feel obliged' to get one for everybody--the gifts then were quality rather than quantity. I wonder though if it would be good to set a olimit of some sort so that folks do not get a faberge' egg or somethin. Laurel |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: Kim C Date: 09 Oct 02 - 11:45 AM Well, I think we had a little questionnaire in a Hints thread, where we told the sorts of things we liked and didn't like... I don't remember exactly what the questions were. Things like, favorite color, gender (if applicable), hobbies, etc. |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: Trevor Date: 09 Oct 02 - 11:23 AM Count me in. What happens next? |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: CapriUni Date: 09 Oct 02 - 10:46 AM Just a minor downer here - I took part and sent something off, so that bit went OK. I never actually heard from my SS, and I never did make up my mind whether to mention it or not. Same thing happened to me, sort of. I did hear from my SS -- once, in the hints thread, and then never again. Never got anything, either... but that wasn't why I got involved anyway. Making my Santee's Prezzie (and teasing him through PM's), and knowing he received it and liked it, was jolly enough reason to do it again this year... I just hope nothing bad happened to my Santa -- such as falling off the edge of the planet, or somesuch. Never did find out who it was, so I couldn't ask: "Are you okay?" So -- if you're still out there: Are you Okay? Is Everything copacetic? Hope so. |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: MMario Date: 09 Oct 02 - 10:16 AM And I still owe you plants! count me in as well. |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: Bat Goddess Date: 09 Oct 02 - 10:14 AM Count me in, too! Last year's was the high point of an otherwise desultory season.

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: Sarah the flute Date: 09 Oct 02 - 09:58 AM Well count me in too! It was loads of fun last year and I'd like to repeat the experience. I received an amazing gift and the bit that was the bamboo low F whistle has had loads of outings! Sarah |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: SharonA Date: 09 Oct 02 - 09:42 AM I'd love to be a Secret Santa again this year! I loved my pressies from last year, especially the Bagpuss beanbag and, of course, the Marigolds – yellow rubber gloves from the UK – about which my Secret Santa and I kept up a running joke! The whole thing was a lot of fun, so I'm looking forward to Mudcat Secret Santa II this year. By the way, just to add a bit to the description by Gloredhel (my Santee last year!), it's not necessarily a swap of presents between two people; in other words, just because person A is the Secret Santa of person B does not have to mean that B is the Secret Santa of A (though I suppose it could happen!). Rather, A sends a present to B who sends a present to C who sends a present to D who sends a present to E who sends a present to A (or maybe Z sends a present to A... you know what I mean?). Because of concerns about the cost of postage, one is allowed to request that his or her Santee be a person in the same country, if one wishes. I'm afraid I can't volunteer to coordinate any of this – and those who know me in the 3D world know that that sort of thing is not my strong suit anyway (*G*) – but please count me in as a participant! |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: Kim C Date: 09 Oct 02 - 09:41 AM All right, count me in. Whoever decides for sure to be Coordinator, just PM me and I'll send my info. :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: John MacKenzie Date: 09 Oct 02 - 09:38 AM Yes I missed out last year, and would love to participate this time around. Giok |

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: sian, west wales Date: 09 Oct 02 - 09:21 AM Just a minor downer here - I took part and sent something off, so that bit went OK. I never actually heard from my SS, and I never did make up my mind whether to mention it or not. (KarenB was the co-ordinator). Didn't know if something was lost in the post, or if my SS just never got around to it. sian |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: GUEST Date: 09 Oct 02 - 09:20 AM Hey I don't mind doing it. I don't work so I have plenty of time on my hands. Whatever is easiest!! Cat |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: Giac Date: 09 Oct 02 - 05:56 AM Good idea to get started early! I wasn't in on it last year either, but everybody seemed to have way too much fun. Hey!!! Helen just volunteered! Six weeks to Australia? Gosh, that leaves only about a month to prepare for those exchanges. ~:o) Mary |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: Helen Date: 09 Oct 02 - 03:03 AM I was really glad I joined in last year. I want to suggest that whoever coordinates it - please remember that surface mail from/to U.S & Australia, or Australia and anywhere tends to take at least 6 weeks so the sooner we get organised, the better it will be for the lucky Santas who get to post their parcels overseas. Hate to say this, jumping in so soon and all that, and I am sure I will regret it but... ........I've been thinking about offering to coordinate it this year. I'll probably regret this over the next few weeks because I am going to be really busy at work but.... Helen |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time? From: Gloredhel Date: 08 Oct 02 - 11:26 PM khandu--you didn't read all the threads on this last year?! You missed out! It was loads of fun. Basically, everyone who wants to participate sends their real mailing addresses to the person who volunteers to coordinate the thing. You will then get a PM which tells you the name, Mudcat name, and address of someone that you are supposed to send a present to, and someone else gets your name. Until the presents arrive at Christmas time, no one is supposed to know who is sending them a present. We had lots of fun on the threads listing our interests and things that we liked to give our "Santas" ideas of what to get us. It was also nifty to sign out and post as, say, GUEST, khandu's Secret Santa, and then give our "Santee" clues as to who we were or what they were getting. Looking back at this post, I'm sure clearer or briefer explanations would be welcomed for those who aren't familiar with the idea. Of course, a link to the beginning thread from last year might help, but I'm too lazy. |
