Subject: RE: The Newgate Calendar From: Miken Date: 24 Oct 02 - 09:09 PM I found a copy in a used bookstore in Minneapolis ten years ago. Twenty six famous cases are described, including The riots at Merthyr Tydfil, William Burke,The Earl of Cardigan (assault with intent to murder), and Mary Bateman, commonly called the Yorkshire Witch, executed for murder. Fascinating stories, and lots of songs possible here. Mike |

Subject: The Newgate Calendar From: IanC Date: 24 Oct 02 - 11:35 AM I recently found a site on the web called Ex-Classics which has an online copy of "The Newgate Calendar". This work is a record of famous criminal cases from British history (cases from it were serialised on BBC Television in the 1960s) including the following, which may have some interest to students of folk song. . Gilderoy . Captain Kidd . Jack Hall . Dick Turpin There are no doubt many others! :-) Ian |
