Subject: RE: BS: Free Beer if you're Canadian! From: Cluin Date: 21 Dec 02 - 03:46 PM I was an idiot before all of you. How do you think I got the link. By the way, it's a little Shockwave Flash file. Very common on the web and as far as I know, there haven't been any viruses attached to those type of files yet. I just thought the little song was funny, even taken out of the context of the bait. |

Subject: RE: BS: Free Beer if you're Canadian! From: *daylia* Date: 21 Dec 02 - 01:32 PM "Four and twenty Yankees, Feeling very dry, Went across the border To get a drink of rye. When the rye was opened, the Yanks began to sing, 'God Bless America, but God Save the King!!" - Anonymous ditty recorded by Edward VIII (1894-1972) upon viewing Americans crossing the Canadian border during Prohibition. I think it applies to beer too - when American friends visit me, the beer-drinkers among them always rave about Canadian beer!! daylia |

Subject: RE: BS: Free Beer if you're Canadian! From: GUEST Date: 21 Dec 02 - 01:05 PM Well, you might be able to get free sixer of Canadian skunk piss (as we Minnesotans fondly refer to Molsons), or your could get an absolutely free, no strings attached gift from a site that will not harvest your email, and that is from the SantaElf at www.peaceforchristmas.org! And it's a gift that keeps giving and receiving all year round! SantAnon |

Subject: RE: BS: Free Beer if you're Canadian! From: Jeri Date: 21 Dec 02 - 12:59 PM Joe, I have scripting of Active X and "access data across domains" disabled. (Everything else is either "enable" or "prompt.") I think it was probably the latter that caused me not to see whatever's there. I could change my settings to view the page, but why? It seems like if I do, I'll have to confess to being an idiot, right? Joe, you changed it so there must be something else fishy? If it was based on me not being able to load it because of my settings or my paranoia, you can probably re-linkify it. I have up-to-date anti-virus and it detected nothing. Other folks seem to be having fun with it. Hi, Jeri - I changed the link to text because you voiced suspicions - I didn't even check out the site, because I trusted your word. I figure if there's anything about a site that might cause problems, it's better to post the URL as text instead of a link, and to say what causes us to be suspicious about the site. If it collects e-mail addresses and doesn't seem to be a site that belongs to the brewer, I'd say that's pretty suspicious. |

Subject: RE: BS: Free Beer if you're Canadian! From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Dec 02 - 12:44 PM Jeri, do you have good instructions on how to turn off scripting so problems sites won't do unwelcome things on your computer? In Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE), I go to tools/Internet Options and set the options where I want them - but I don't have specific instructions for ideal settings. I know what I want and how to set them for myself - but it's complicated to explain. The "default" settings that come when you install a browser are usually pretty good. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: BS: Free Beer if you're Canadian! From: *daylia* Date: 21 Dec 02 - 12:32 PM I've got the latest version of Norton Anti-virus progam on my computer. My son installed it when he created a 'firewall' because he downloads music and video files regularly ( an infamous source of viruses etc). It always warns me or totally prevents me from opening suspicious files, and it didn't even SQUEAK at Cluin's link above, eh! Just a thought - and now I'll get back to my back-bacon and beer ;-) daylia PS what kind of protection do you have on your computer Jeri? I'm new at this and may be missing something ... |

Subject: RE: BS: Free Beer if you're Canadian! From: Jeri Date: 21 Dec 02 - 12:12 PM I clicked it Willie-O. It tried to run something my computer wouldn't let it run so I never saw it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Free Beer if you're Canadian! From: Jeri Date: 21 Dec 02 - 11:31 AM Call me suspicious. Please let us know what happens when you try to use the coupon. I have trouble believing that a site in Italy would GIVE beer to Canadians. I have absolutely NO trouble believing the site exists to collect e-mail addresses for spamming purposes. |

Subject: RE: BS: Free Beer if you're Canadian! From: Guessed Date: 21 Dec 02 - 06:16 AM I thought Molson's was not held in high regard except perhaps by comparison with Labatt's. But then if it's free - and as Grant Baynham sings about snobishness with wine - "It all comes back to the falling-over factor and the fact that it gets you drunk". |

Subject: BS: Free Beer if you're Canadian! From: Cluin Date: 21 Dec 02 - 02:40 AM Hey! Cool! Free beer!!!! If you are in Canada, that is. (Sorry all you poor non-Canucks) This is excellent! Just in time for the holidays. Just fill out the survey. It only took me a minute or two, and then you will be provided with a coupon you can print off. Entitles you to one free party pack of Molsons. Finally the Web is good for something. http://digilander.libero.it/caricacell - Click here for free beer! When a posted link seems suspicious, I change the link to text - visit this site at your own risk. As far as I know, the only questionable thing about it is that it asks you for personal information and doesn't seem to be a site that would make proper use of that information. If you don't provide the requested information, the site is probably harmless. |
