Harvey: I don't know if it works the same on everybody's computer, but here's how it works on mine: When you type your message into the message box, it appears in Courier font, but after you press "Submit Message" and the message is added to the thread, your browser shows it to you in Times New Roman font. Courier is a fixed-width font; all characters, including the space, are the same width. Times New Roman is a variable-width font; some letters are wider than others, and spaces are very narrow. Compare these lines:

In Times New Roman:
iiiiiiiiii
rrrrrrrrrr
ssssssssss
aaaaaaaaaa
bbbbbbbbbb
mmmmmmmmmm
Note: a space is slightly narrower than the letter "i".
Here's the same text in Courier:
iiiiiiiiii
rrrrrrrrrr
ssssssssss
aaaaaaaaaa
bbbbbbbbbb
mmmmmmmmmm
Moral: For predictable spacing, force everybody's browser to display the text in Courier. You do this by using HTML "preformat" commands; i.e. by inserting "<pre>" before and ""</pre>" after the text that you want to show in Courier.

Harvey,
Thanks a lot, much, much appreciated. I am really surprised how quick you answered! This convinced me to join the mudcat community.
I tried the chords and it works perfectly. Don't worry if the chords shift, that happened again and again . Good suggestion by Murray. So again: I am really amazed, brilliant. By the way: I am living now in Ireland for nearly 6 years, it seems to me that you never give concerts over here. Is it right ? (what a pity, there are some really good venues e.g. Whelan's / the Cobblestone where people like Dick Gaughan, Eric Bogle or Kieran Halpin were playing in the past.)
All the best, Chris

I find that using the preview button it's normally possible to adjust the chords to fit. Without that there's always a tendency for the chords to drift left.

Great song. Well, that's expected when it's Harvey Andrews.

(Incidentally, for putting down chords I always use upper case for the major chords (A, D etc) and lower case for the minor (a, d etc) - anyone else do that?

Harvey, the best and most reliable technique is to incorporate the chords in the body of the lyric prior to the change

(D)The (G)water (D)is (G)wide, I (C)cannot cross (G) over
Neither (Em)have I (Am)wings to (D) fly

And so on.

Murray

Okay, that's posted wrong too. Help! What am I doing wrong? The chords seem to shift left.

Don't know why but that posted all wrong! Chords all over the place.
I'll try again.
G
First you lose the rhyming
                  C
Then you lose the timing
                  D
Then you lose the money
                  G
then you lose the friends

And you try for one more song
                   C
But the words don't come and the chords are wrong
       D
Whisky bottle won't last long before it ends

Em                         D
I met him in a bar room in Chicago
      Em                            A/D
Iwas writing what became of names we knew
C                                     G
About the ones who'd let their shooting star

Go out of sight
    A             A7             D
The one hit wonder boys who never grew
       A
And I asked him sir
      A7               D
What happened then to you?
       D7
And he said;

Those are the basics. You can "Sex it up" (as they say) with the odd 7th and minor etc.

    d7
He said;
Chorus

He told me, It's an old and tired story
You'll need a way to make it sound brand-new
So tell 'em that I had my share of glory once all right
But I had somebody strong to see me through
And she told me all the things I shouldn't do
she said;
Chorus

But I did all a young man does with money
With all those young girls coming on so strong
And that's how come I lost my little honey to the road
'Cause she went off and wrote it in a song

And now you see her up there on the T.V.
She's a superstar and everybody knows
She sings a broken heart just like it should be sung each night
And I never miss a second of her shows
And I know the way the chorus always goes

Final chorus

Just tidied it up a little!

FIRST YOU LOSE THE RHYMING
Harvey Andrews

First you lose the rhyming
then you lose the timing
Then you lose the money
then you lose the friends
And you try for one more song
But the words don't come and the chords are wrong
Whisky bottle won't last long before it ends

I met him in a bar room in Chicago
I was writing what became of names we knew
About the ones who'd let their shooting star go out of sight
The one-hit wonder boys who never grew
And I asked him, Sir, what happened then to you

I think it's two separate words - danke schoen, with a little " over the top of the e, I think.

While I'm in a picky mood, on one line you wrote "then you lose the fiends". I'd be happy to lose the fiends!

It's more like 'Dankeschoen', but the kind thought is appreciated! If in doubt about your German, ask Joe Offer ...

Mr Happy, go to My Songbook for Harvey's original lyrics. Iain MacKintosh changed them slightly to suit his own situation, but I can't get at those just now 'cause my computer is playing up.

Hey Mr H, it is Harvey Andrews. Iain MacKintosh sings it on his "Gentle Persuasion" album, which I've now returned to my mother, so I can't transcribe the words... sorry.
