I might join y'all for dinner, but I'll probably be a bit late -- I don't get off until 5:00 and I have to come from San Pablo Park in Berkeley. And I'll behave, I promise. No snotty remarks.

Dinner friday at Beijing On Irving at 6:15, and earlier start so they can have an evening out afterwards. All welcome! So far it's melani, Radriano, and MichaelR.

Dave -

Hope you have some access to a computer and can check in here. I called the hotel number you left me, but they tell me nobody's in that room, nor do they have your name listed. I'm sure someone must have given you another hotel's number (this one rings at the Holiday Inn). I'll be home tonight around 7:00. Feel free to call up until 11:00. If you can make it to Beijing On Irving, at least Melani and I can be there, hopefully a few others.

Just reponding to earlier parts of the thread. No, definitively, I don't find Ricky or Chanteyranger snotty in the least -- and I would hate it if they thought I thought that.

Dave, a morning poll shows that for Radriano and Melani, Friday would work better. Radriano still needs to play it by ear, but thinks he should be all better by then. If you want to meet us (and whoever else wants to join us) Friday at "Beijing On Irving" around 6:45, please leave a message for me and let me know how that works for you. The address is 1030 Irving street, which is 2 blocks South of Golden Gate Park. The restaurant's number is 731-8110. That should give you and your wife time to get to the folk club later in the evening, if you want.

Don't forget sampling that favorite breakfast of toasted sourdough bagels and creamcheese, followed up with a Ghirardelli light concoction.

You're in good hands, Dave.

Cheerily,

I don't have the phone number at the moment, but it's the San Francisco Ramada Inn, which I'm sure is in the book. Thanx.

I have your phone number from your previous PM.

There's a good Chinese place near Radriano's called "Beijing On Irving." Radriano is recovering from a cold and we were thinking Friday night, but if Thursday is your only open night, Thursday works for me. Maybe Radriano will be recovered, but he's not sure.Dave, if you leave the number where your staying with me, I'll firm things up with you. I can get to the restaurant by 6:45. MichaelR, I'll PM you my number if you want to call.

I really look forward to meeting you, MichaelR, along with Chanteyranger and Riggy, and anyone else of this crew who shows up.

Looks like Thursday night is the happy occasion. Anyone else want to meet with us? Please do!

I won't be checking Mudcat any more after tonight, because we're flying EARLY Wednesday morning, but I hope that Chanteyranger will, and if you're interested you can check with him.

Okay, let's say it's Thursday or Friday, since I have a number of possible days and Chanteranger has okayed those days. I'll be guided by SF Catters' interest, both in the day and location.

I'd like to have the day tied down yet today, if possible. I expect which day is chosen will be influenced by who all may be coming. In any case, I will be phoning Chanteyranger from the SF area on Wednesday, to see what the current situation is. Also to talk about where we'll be.

I'm really looking forward to putting some faces to a few Mudcat names!

We haven't been to the SF Folk Music Club meeting in a long time but, if it hasn't changed, there's a singing room where they go around the room and you can sing, request a song or pass. If there's any interest on that particular night there may be an Irish or old timey instrumental session going on in another room and maybe even country/western singing in another. It's in a victorian house and the singing is in the dining room but the living room and basement are also available. One thing for certain is that there is always someone specifially engaged in greeting people at the door to explain what's going on and answering questions.

The hootenanny is a relatively new thing (about a year old) and it's still trying to find itself. Richard Rice (equalrice@yahoo.com or 415 775 0221), who runs it, is very freindly and if you tell him we sent you he probably won't bite. The emphasis is on performing and several groups or individuals will do short sets. There has been talk of including some jamming, too. We've never been (we're 250 miles away!) but everyone says it's a lot of fun.

Incidentally, can someone tell me something about the format of the SF Folk Music Club meetings and the Hootenany? That word "Hootenany" has different meanings to different folks, it seems.

Chanteyranger:

That sounds wonderful!

My FAVORED choices of night would be Wednesday, Thursday, and Monday, but Friday, and Saturday would be possible if that's when most people could be there.

Friday and Saturday I'm only putting on a lower level of desirability because of the SF Folk Music Club and the Saturday night Hootenany.

Sunday night we'll be up in the Napa area, so wouldn't be available.

I need to get this set up today (Monday 3/3) or tomorrow (Tues 3/4), because we are flying EARLY Wednesday.

I'll rely on someone there to organize where to meet.

And take the ferry to Sausalito, a lovely trip. Then consider hunting down The Ship Tavern, Spec's Museum Cafe, and the Hippodrome, the remnants of San Francisco's Barbary Coast.

And don't forget to report back about your adventures.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble, who fondly remembers last summer's visit and the warm hospitality shown by the above Mudcatters

You have a right to be humble, Chanteyranger! [grin]

Dave, I wish I could get down the hill to sing with you sometime during your visit, but I don't think it's going to happen. If you have a car, drive up to Point Reyes and take at least a short walk among the wildflowers at Chimney Rock. I was there a week ago, and the flowers were already pretty good (April is peak).

Uncle DaveO, here's a link
to one of the great folk music concert venues in the Bay Area, called the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley. There are shows nightly during your stay, the March calendar will give you details and artist links. There are also sea songs at Quinn's Lighthouse in Oakland on Thursday March 6, PM me for directions if you're interested.

***
Sharyn: Sorry you've had a bad time at the Plough, it's no fun to go to a session and feel like you haven't been welcomed the way you want to be.   Let me know next time you plan to drop in, I'll buy you a pint. Do you play an instrument? Send me a PM and let me know how to recognize you.

****
Shay: On behalf of Chanteyranger, Riggy and myself, I'd like to ask what's so bad about having big Eggos? Those tasty toaster treats are wonderful breakfast foods, and we often enjoy sharing them with others at sessions and if.... oh, wait, Dave just pointed out that you accused the three of us of having big EGOS, not Eggos. In the words of Emily Latella... nevermind.

(I'm not even worried about that accusation, I happen to know that humility is one of my most wonderful qualities...)

Just so you have another opinion: the Berkeley Irish session is snotty and run by people with large egos -- I can only tolerate it two or three times a year.

The Irish session at the Starry Plough, Sunday night in Berkeley is led by Irish singer Shay Black, and is warm, friendly, and welcoming. Mudcatters Riggy, P.J., and myself are regulars there. There is singing as well as tunes (if you like Irish music). PM me for other suggestions, if you'd like.

Irish sessions on Sunday and Tuesday at The Plough and Stars in SF (not to be confused with The Starry Plough in Berkeley!)

As for stores -- there's Lark in the Morning (instruments from all over the world, plus instruction books) in the Cannery at Fisherman's Wharf, where you should go anyway for the fresh crab.

Best record store in the area is Down Home Music in El Cerrito (next to Berkeley).

You could also PM Mudcatters radriano and Dave Swan to find out what they know.

Cheers,
Michael

Not folkie, but there's a couple of great bands playing the Black Diamond Brewery in Walnut Creek on Saturday the 8th. The food's not bad and the beer is great.

9pm - White Trash Compactor (acoustic bluegrass with a big sense of humor)
10pm 'til late - Mary Carves the Chicken (electrified bluesy-country-rock 'n' roll or whatever they happen to be playing that night)

If you were gonna be here March 1, you could come to our chantey sing at Hyde Street Pier. There is a Sunday night Irish session at the Starry Plough in Berkeley, 8 p.m., and probably a whole bunch of other stuff I don't know about. I'm sure the rest of the Bay Area 'Catters will be along shortly with more info.

My beautiful wife and I are going to be in San Francisco from March 5 through March 10. I'd love to have suggestions (aside from restaurants, which we know how to find) as to what's going on, jams, acoustic music stores, folksong events, Mudcatters to see perhaps, and so on.
I'm a guitar/banjo/cittern player and folksong singer, and think I might be able to bring my cittern along, if the airline will let me carry it on. No way will it be checked.
