I have to agree with Amos - I sang with Mariachi bands for awhile and know many, many rancheras y corridos, which are the standards of Mariachi bands. Lovely, beautiful songs. Not sure what Hrothgar meant by the comment above. Spanish actually rolls off the tongue better than English when singing, I think.

Mariachi bands are traditonally singers of songs for love, courtship and broken hearts, and get hired for weddings too. Always with vocals. Their music is richly sentimental -- a cross between Cielito Lindo and O, Mein Papa, or something like that. Real tearjerkers and a richly beautiful sound, a tapesrty of brass and big bass guitars and other strings. I could listen to them for an hour or two. They do regret, yearning, sorrow and lovesick better than any English variant I've ever heard, and they make Barb'ry Ellen sound like a Barbie Doll.

Last night one of the Kruger brothers opined that "You Are My Sunshine" is the only piece of truly world music, because no matter what country they play in, everybody seems to know it.

They do songs as well, in fact nearly all of the stuff I hear is sung.
Besides that there are several 'popular' folk entertainments in the US - including - Mali, which are not in English.

Incidentaly WorldFolk, if I may call it that, does not have any default language, but the music does.

Listening to Mariachis and other language folk music here, I wonder hor far down the popular CD street we shall find barely no Englishlanguage on the shelves
