Subject: RE: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: Sam L Date: 27 Mar 03 - 08:21 PM Mudlark, I had a similar experience with H&R Block once, they made such glaring careless errors (ah, what's a zero? it's nothing) I had to go over over all of it again. Uhg. Oh, and Fred--YOU'RE the evil one, by the way. Just ask mom. |

Subject: RE: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: Mudlark Date: 27 Mar 03 - 03:35 PM I just got back from a second go-around with the free AARP tax preparers at my local Sr. Center. Since I've not got much, and am nominally retired, it should have been an easy return (not for ME, however...the weight of the intstuction book alone scares the hell out of me). The first time around she forgot to credit me with a loss carried over from '01. God knows how I managed to catch it, and after pointing it out my tax payment was cut to a third of what she originally told me. Finally got that straightened out, much shuffling of papers, and just as I was signing my life away, getting ready for her to file electronically, I realized she'd typed my name in wrong, given me a different middle initial. And I had to really struggle with her to not only get her to change it, but to give me new copies with my real name. Now I'm wondering if the $250 or so I saved was really such a good idea?! I went over everything again, finally let her submit it. Now all I have to do is come up with the cash...and hope the return is at least mostly right. |

Subject: RE: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: Sam L Date: 27 Mar 03 - 02:53 PM The color depends, I try to pick something that suits the individual kid, or I just go with whatever was discount in the mis-mixed bin. I used to do the taxes myself, but for awhile I worked in a state with no reciprocity to the one I lived in, and it got out of hand. Took at least an hour on the phone to find the IRS person with the authority to say they didn't know what I was supposed to do. |

Subject: RE: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: Allan C. Date: 27 Mar 03 - 05:21 AM I think it is a scandal that (in the USA) one must hire someone to sort out the thousands of pages of new tax revisons that are created each year. If one has anything out of the ordinary in income or exclusions, then it is nigh onto impossible to figure it out without help. I just finished finding out the horrible amount I owe and had to pay more than ten percent of that figure to the tax accountant. Grumble...bitch...gr-r-r-r. Ask me if I support the flat tax plan! |

Subject: RE: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: MMario Date: 26 Mar 03 - 11:43 AM I claim zero deductions on the withholding - and due to the wonders of tax laws *still* end up owing state income tax. |

Subject: RE: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: Sam L Date: 26 Mar 03 - 11:42 AM Pull MY weight? The Adult Adult Education video thing was MY idea. Start with the vowel sounds. How come everytime I get on here, you're on? Don't you have some pictures to paint? |

Subject: RE: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: Sam L Date: 26 Mar 03 - 11:39 AM I thought we were withholding enough, since we weren't doing the spot work we used to do quarterly estimates on. But, um, goddamn! Guess I said that already. Bobert, well, I was toying with an idea of selling bongs, or making an ADULT adult literacy porn video series--haven't heard back from the muppets yet--but, I guess I'll keep at painting kids and my three or four day-jobs another year. There's something terribly depressing about a social worker having to borrow to pay taxes. Bush has an extra forty thousand, maybe he'll lend you. If I could get my evil twin to pull his weight, I'd probably come out ahead. |

Subject: RE: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: NicoleC Date: 26 Mar 03 - 01:34 AM I never get stuck with a tax bill; I prefer to take my pain in smaller doses and I careful to withhold more than I need to. I got my modest refund in February. The mortage deduction helps a LOT, even though I fundamentally disagree with the concept. (Flat tax! FLAT TAX!) (Then again, I disagree with paying our regular grunt soldiers squat while investing billions year after year in military projects that will never get off the ground, but no one asked me if I could pick and choose where my tax dollars went.) |

Subject: RE: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: Sorcha Date: 25 Mar 03 - 10:49 PM Mine are all done and in the mail (good accountant). Like Celtic Soul, we are getting a little bit back, but compared to what we had to send in for the last 5.........sheesh. What say we tell Them that this War bill comes out of Daddy Shrub, Jr. Shrub and Doc Cheney's pockets?? Sorry, boys, you'll have to sell the ranches....... |

Subject: RE: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: Bobert Date: 25 Mar 03 - 09:16 PM Fred: Calm down, pal. I have an idea. Go underground, find a cash business and just disappear from the view of the taxman. Whaddayathink? Then you wouldn't be paying salaries to idiots who just sit around trying to figure out more ways to mess with ya'. Hey, it was just an idea. I'm screwed, too. I allready figgured out my stuff and trying to figure out how to pay the 3 grand I'll be short without doing what I end up doing every year.... Borrowing it... And paying interest to the *friends* of the same idiots who sit around trying to figure out more ways to mess with you (me)... Their game, their rules and if they want to change 'em in the middle of the game, hey.... Bobert |

Subject: RE: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: Celtic Soul Date: 25 Mar 03 - 09:05 PM Jeez....don't remind me. We are getting back this year, but considering what we owed 2 years in a row, that is only small solice. Why in Gods name is the Government sending me "rebate" checks in the fall only to turn around and tell me to send it back to them in April? How stupid is that? This year, I am claiming 0 deductions, and letting them have the whole check. At least come April, I will not be selling blood to keep the IRS offa my front porch. |

Subject: RE: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: SINSULL Date: 25 Mar 03 - 08:58 PM Crap! I am confined to quarters this weekend. My tax return includes the sale of one house, the purchase of another, unemployment income paid in two different states, part year resident in NY and NYC and Maine. And everything is tucked away in boxes, drawers, corners,... |

Subject: RE: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: Sam L Date: 25 Mar 03 - 07:55 PM Screw you, Fred, and I mean that quite sincerely. All the rambling BS I post? You should read some of your own posts, sometime, you jackass. I'm deeply embarrassed, ashamed, actually, that people sometimes get us mixed up--he's the rude, stupid one, with the juvenile streak. I'm the Nice one, who likes everybody. |

Subject: RE: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: Sam L Date: 25 Mar 03 - 07:44 PM Quit whining, you lazy idiot. All the rambling BS you post here, I'm surprised you have a job at all. Count your blessings, you useless, self-important @*^%$$! |

Subject: BS: High cost of poverty, taxes From: Sam L Date: 25 Mar 03 - 07:39 PM Damn, did my taxes this morning. Damn! God, um, ...damn! Goddamn. Whew, brother. Man... dude! I'm going to have to make some money this year, it costs too much to be poor. Damn! My tax guy was whining what a bad way it was to start HIS day. Geez. He sat there staring at it the longest time. I kept better track of receipts and everything than I ever have. Didn't make a dent. Nothing helped. My wife didn't do all her usual criminal self-employed stuff, that used to hurt us, but. Damn. Sorry kids, daddy can't play, he needs to try to get into a higher tax bracket. Anybody need a kid's portrait painted? Damn! |
