I guess it is not surprising that many of his contemporaries did not recognise his stature. By all accounts, after his initial recordings, he lived quietly and modestly as a sharecropper and only thought of music as his hobby. (He was not the only great American musician of whom that was true). He was bemused by the attention he received in the final years of his life - and very probably did not realise just what an influence he would have on many of the next generation. I wish I could have met him or seen him play, but I was only thirteen years old when he died in November 1968 (I think). I hope he's smiling at us now. I certainly always smile when I hear that lovely picking and wry humour.

Do you have information about the festival. Dates, ticket prices, schedule, etc.?

Couldn't get through on the link. The museum is located in Carroll County, Mississippi, about 5 miles from where I was raised. It is my plan to attend the MJH Festival this summer, located at the Museum site.

The museum is the old shotgun shack John lived in. It has been restored and relocated near the original site to some land belonging to his neice.

For too long, the Carroll County residents did not give proper honor to the man and his music. Now, at long last, he is being recognized by his "home-folk" as the treasure he is.

Take a look at this wonderful museum and web site dedicated to one of the greatest persons ever to play music or walk on this Earth, Mississippi John Hurt. To think, he kept himself and his love of the music alive for so many years, and that he was found to let us see and hear him. I am proud to say that I shook the man's hand, and I plan to get a t-shirt and donate to this effort.
