Our Sat session wasn't really as lively as I'd hoped but it still turned out well. The Sun one that was on the program and also in the Albion really (IMO) did fly at times.

I spoke to a number of people over my feelings about the "fringe". I think I could some up the overall feedback I got as this:

Yes, the fringe is a little bit thin but it needs to be remembered that the festival is only 5 years old and does get some great acts. If it keeps up and there is interest in fringe events, that bit will start to increase.

Had a blast! Great weather helped, of course, but it's a nice wee festival and we made some new friends, got to play and sing loads of stuff, heard some incredible acts. And that was without ever going near the main stage. Yes, the fringe is a little thin, but it was still a fine week-end's fun.

The Albion have agreed to us having a session from 2pm onwards on Saturday so hopefully something will get going there.

I still haven't got into Cromer to see if I can find a venue for Saturday but will try tommorrow. I'll be going into Norwich for the session that (Wednesday) night so should have some news as to whether we have the Sat afternoon session is on to report on Thursday.

Hamish, I'm game to try anything. I should be able to borrow Pip's mobile phone for the event so if you wish, email me at [e-mail] and I'll give you my contact number.

I think it will be really great if more fringe events happen this year. The concert line up looks pretty solid to me. If the other bit takes off, I think we really would have a (local for me) event for the diary.

I've looked up some phone numbers of possibles venues for the Friday night (cos they each host some sort of fringe event). They are:

• Albion Hotel 01263 513135

So I'll get around to sounding them out (pun intended) over the weekend and post back here with any results.

In the meantime, if any of you have any knowledge of which of the above might be most suitable, then please let me know. Via this thread will be fine.

Hope Jon's session Saturday pm works out: I'll certainly pop in if there's one on.

Oh and Hamish, I don't know if you like real ale but if you do, you'll probably like the Marquee. They usually have a good selection of Woodforde's beers there. I'm especially fond of "Nelson's Revenge".

I'm in the process of trying to set a session up for Sat afternoon. I've got a few players from the Wed night Irish session interested and will try to find a pub willing to have us tommorrow. The Wed night is purely Irish instrumental but I'd imagine this one, if it gets going, would be rather more flexible - we'd just have to see what happens.

I see Last Night's Fun are playing on Friday. I've met 2/3 of the group (Chris and Denny) in the past. There is the off chance they may be interested in some extra music - last time I met them was in the Rhuddlan (N Wales) festival 3 or 4 years ago and they were very much part of the afternoon outdoor (on a beautiful sunny afternoon) session.

Ho hum: that's what I feared about the fringe events. I'm playing in the marquee on Saturday at 6 o'clock (evening, thankfully!) and was hoping for some sort of singaround Friday evening but there's nowt listed. The most there seems to be is the marquee and some workshops; plus an open mic on Saturday and Sunday lunchtimes.

Buffers Bar has an open stage on Saturday lunchtime. Giovanni's, the Anglia Court Hotel and the Albion Inn all have something sporadically, so it might be worth trying for a "spontaneous" session or singaround at one of them. Any takers? Friday night? Otherwise I expect to dip into the marquee from time to time. (It's free entry and won't be just die-hard folkies, but there's some decent performers on the bill).

If anyone fancies the "trying for a "spontaneous" session or singaround" concept we could share mobile numbers...?

I have to agree with Jon about Cromer. Mick and I went there 2/3 years ago and couldn't find a sing or a session anywhere. We ended up visiting the beautiful town of Lavenham instead.

Had a great crab sarnie in Cromer though! lol

I'll probably wander in a few times as Cromer is only about 2 miles from me but the event doesn't really do much for me - nothing ever happens in the way of a spontanious session in a pub.
