In 1990, Gordon Bok was on the faculty at the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop in Washington State. He offered a course called "Things to do with more than one voice." Those of us in the class that week learned a number of songs from The February Tapes, including "Smiling Lindy Low", and the indescribable "Donkey Engine", as well as "Wind Calling" from his cante-fable "Another Land Made of Water". Our class was augmented by about 50 to perform "Wind Calling" at the student concert. That night, the wind came up fiercely, even blew a tree down. Gordon says that happens all the time!

Aloha,
Mark

"Come Smiling, Lindy Lowe" is on Gordon Bok's The February Tapes, Volume II.

This page has a very short sound sample (not even a full verse and chorus) of Lindy Lowe, from the cassette "On Deck" by Simon Spalding & Cztery Refy.

Eubie Blake recorded a song called "My Lindy Low." A song called "Mah Lindy Lou," attributed to Strickland, was recorded by Paul Robeson, Burl Ives, and others. Leadbelly sings "My Lindy Lou" a cappella on "Leadbelly's Last Sessions" (1994). But as far as I can determine, none of these are related to the chantey given above.

Copied from the web site of a Polish band, Cztery Refy:
(They have lots of other chanteys and sea songs there. Click on their "repertoire" button. They have a midi, too, but it doesn't seem to have the right number of notes to match the syllables.)

LINDY LOWE
(Words & music traditional)

Come smiling, Lindy Lowe,
The purtiest girl I know,

CHORUS: On the finest boat that ever float,
On the Ohio!
The Mississippi, on the Ohio!

Come smiling, Lindy Lowe,
To the bayous deep and slow, CHORUS

Come smiling, Lindy Lowe,
To the Gulf of Mexico, CHORUS

Come smiling, Lindy Lowe,
To the Louisiana shore, CHORUS

Come smiling, Lindy Lowe,
'Cause the bell done ring to go, CHORUS

Come smiling, Lindy Lowe,
Before that whistle blow, CHORUS

Come smiling, Lindy Lowe,
Come git on board, or row! CHORUS

"Here's an interesting Mississippi Riverboatman's song, collected by the famous American sailor/author Frederick Pease Harlow."
