The P A shop in Hanwell on the Uxbridge road does a Peavey five channel mixer amp and speakers for under three hundred quid . Its been described to me as a LOUD 100 watt which ought to do most pubs unless you are doing ballroom size rooms.Also just up the road from you is Platterpuss just by Hayes station,calls its self Karaoke but seems to have a reasonable aray of P A gear,.

Dear Larkin,

As you're in Europe and money is a concern you could perhaps consider looking at a Behringer 2x250W system with 10 channels and built-in multieffects for around about Euro 820 - 850 new.

You can of couse get better, and it would be worth looking secondhand, but the price escalates quickly with quality and extra power. For pub venues and Irish music I would suggest 2x250W (bridgeable to 500W mono) as a minimum in order to get above the din of the punters.

In the US Carvin (www.carvin.com) has some really good gear for the price. I been in venues where Carvin was used and had really good sound.

Larkin,

what sort of gear did your banjo player use - perhaps that will give some guide on power.

Do you need the whole lot - mics, stands, cables, mixer, power amp (or powered mixer), speakers, foldback etc? or just a PA mixer amp and a couple of speakers.

Everybody has their own preferences on brands but for pub gigs it's nice to keep it simple. I use Beyer and AKG mics, a powered mixer (Studiomaster but there are other equally good makes) which can provide power for front of house and foldbacks when required (350W per side) and either EV or DAS speakers (again take your pick from other brands such as JBL).

I believe you're in London - take a look at Studiospares www.studiospares.co.uk who have just moved from Camden Town to Staples Corner.
They have the Fender Passport portable PA as well as powered mixers by Yamaha, Stageline and Soundcraft and speakers by Yamaha, JBL, and Samson.

We've just lost our Banjo player and unfortunately he had the PA so we've got to get one by September . We play Irish music mainly in Pubs . Any advice on what we should be looking to buy- wattage , best buys etc. Bearing in mind we don't have huge amounts of money. Thanks Martin
