Subject: Whistle Stop at Boston Folk Festival From: GUEST,Whistle Stop Date: 09 Sep 03 - 08:15 AM Can I indulge in a little shameless self-promotion? It requires that I divulge my true, non-Mudcat identity, but what the hell: Steve Roberson has been selected as a finalist in the Boston Folk Festival Songwriter's Contest! Steve was selected along with four other finalists from a field of more than 350 entries, and will be performing his song "Cold Harbor" at the Boston Folk Festival at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19th. The entries will be judged by a panel including Tom Rush, Joel Mabus, and other prominent members of the folk music community. The final contest winner will be announced that evening, and will perform again for the festival at 4:00 p.m. the following day. This year's Boston Folk Festival will feature some of the leading performers in folk music today, including Emmylou Harris, Tom Rush, Joel Mabus, Greg Brown, Paul Brady, Richard Shindell, Tony Trishka, and many others. The event runs from September 19th through the 21st, and is held at the Boston campus of the University of Massachusetts. Complete festival details are available at www.bostonfolkfestival.org . The battle of Cold Harbor took place in June of 1864 at the small crossroads of Cold Harbor, Virginia, in the last year of the American Civil War. The location was neither cold, nor a harbor; in fact, the battle was fought on a blisteringly hot day, with no water in sight. The battle pitted the Grand Army of the Republic, under the leadership of Ulysses Grant, against the Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by Robert E. Lee. The battle was a Confederate victory, and is said to be the only assault Grant ever regretted ordering. Steve's song "Cold Harbor" tells the story from the vantage point of a young Confederate soldier who had just come of age and joined the army in the field in time for the battle. The song depicts how war, even for the victors, is a harrowing and tragic experience. Steve's CD, "Whistle Stop Town," is scheduled for release in October. It will feature the song "Cold Harbor," as well as ten other original songs. A CD release party is in the planning stages; stay tuned for more details. Thanks; wish me luck! -- WS |
