Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Little Drummer Boy (you're all the world) From: Ythanside Date: 27 Dec 07 - 05:41 PM I'm sure that the version Boab is/was looking for was a lullaby recorded by Bing Crosby in the 1930s. It was a childhood favourite of my late brother, another Boab, and during the latter stages of his terminal illness around twenty years ago I spent quite some time on a fruitless search for a copy of the record or the sheet music. The only line of it that I can recall is 'so go to sleep my little drummer boy'. If anyone out there could come up with the complete issue I, too, should be most grateful. Cheers, Ythanside |
Subject: Lyr Add: LITTLE DRUMMER BOY (Mickey MacConnell) From: Susanne (skw) Date: 26 Dec 07 - 09:18 PM Jim, the song Boab was after is definitely not Mickey MacConnell's. I thought I'd posted the lyrics on the forum before ... THE LITTLE DRUMMER BOY (Mickey MacConnell) I'm the minister for justice in a sad divided land Surrounded by rebellion, discontent on every hand You can see it in men's faces as they draw their weekly dole With their eyes as bleak as bullets and black murder in their soul So we'll have to blind the ferryman, break the piper's hands Lock up all those poets that the people understand There's a dangerous wind a-blowing through this sad divided land And it's time to kill the little drummer boy You see, the poets and the singers are like drummer boys of yore Who helped to raise the banners and lead foolish men to war Little boys in scarlet uniforms to keep the troops in step Up to the muzzles of the cannons on their one-way march to death So we'll have to blind the ferryman, break the piper's hands And lock up all those singers that the people understand There's a dangerous wind a-blowing through this sad divided land And it's time to kill the little drummer boy It doesn't matter who's in power at any given time If we want freedom and democracy we'll have to toe the line The poor are always with us, on that we're all agreed And the sooner they realise it then the happier they'll be So we'll have to blind the ferryman, break the piper's hands And lock up all those painters that the people understand There's a dangerous wind a-blowing through this sad divided land And it's time to kill the little drummer boy There were drummer boys in Chile, in El Salvador and France South Africa, the Philippines you can hear them sound 'advance' In Yugoslavia, in Ireland, behind the Berlin Wall You know those little drummer boys they would crucify us all So we'll have to blind the ferryman, break the piper's hands And lock up all those writers that the people understand There's a dangerous wind a-blowing through this sad divided land And it's time to kill the little drummer boy Yes I'm the minister for justice in this sad divided land Surrounded by rebellion, discontent on every hand So I'll have to bring in stricter laws, make sure they know it's wrong To force rebellion in poetry, in painting and in song So we'll have to blind the ferryman, break the piper's hands And lock up all those people that the people understand There's a dangerous wind a-blowing through this sad divided land And it's time to kill the little drummer boy (as sung by Iain MacKintosh) It can also be found on My Songbook with some notes. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Little Drummer Boy (you're all the world) From: Jim Dixon Date: 26 Dec 07 - 11:07 AM I see that Mickey MacConnell (our own chordstrangler) recorded (and probably wrote) a song called THE LITTLE DRUMMER BOY. He calls it "a twist to the story." It's on his album "Joined Up Writing." There are no lyrics or sound sample there, so I can't say for sure whether it's the one you want, but I doubt it. Anyway, it's different from the "pa-rum-pa-pum-pum" one, and it would be nice to have it documented at Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Little Dummer Boy / Carol of the Drum From: GUEST,Audrey Date: 22 Apr 07 - 03:26 PM My dad used to sing this to me when I was a little girl. I'd love to get a copy of it too. The last bit, as far as I remember (or indeed if my dad, notorious for making words up, got it right) was: Reveille will sound int he morning Once more on parade you will go, So close your eyes, my Little Drummer Boy And dream of the ones that you love so |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Little Dummer Boy / Carol of the Drum From: GUEST,Leonard Date: 23 Feb 07 - 02:44 PM Hi Boab, This is the number you are referring to :- The day is ending little drummer boy, Lights out was sounded long ago, So close your eyes my little drummer boy, And say goodnight to all your friends and foes. Reveille will sound in the morning, And once more on parade you will go,.... and there I'm afraid, my memory fails me for the last couplet. I have searched for ever on the net to find it, to no avail. :( |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Little Dummer Boy From: Brakn Date: 18 Nov 04 - 04:51 PM Did anyone find that OTHER "Little Drummer Boy" that Boab mentioned a while back? |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Little Dummer Boy From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 14 Sep 04 - 11:48 PM "Little Drummer Boy's March" (no words) was published in 1864. Hard to find songs on this subject because google is overwhelmed by entries about the (purported) carol. Boab, I remember it, too. American Memory has several, including "Drummer Boy of Shiloh" by Will Hays, 1865, commemorating one of the little drummer boys who died with the troops during the Civil War. The "Drummer Boy's Farewell," and "For the Dear Old Flag I'll Die," 1862 by Stephen C. Foster, "The Death of Ellsworth" by Murphy and the "Drummer Boy of Vicksburg" by De Geer were others about dying drummer boys. "The Drummer Boy of Waterloo" told of an earlier boy who died in battle. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Little Dummer Boy From: GUEST,Boab Date: 14 Sep 04 - 02:39 AM Does anyone know the lyrics of yet ANOTHER "Little Drummer Boy" --a song which I am guessing originates from "between the wars" around the early thirties. Some of the lyrics are as follows--
Dressed up in your little soldier's clothes; Little drummer boy, climb on your Daddy's knee, Rest your weary head in sweet repose. Reveille will sound in the morning, "lights out" has sounded long ago," |
Subject: Little Drummer Boy From: GUEST,Boab Date: 13 Sep 03 - 02:02 PM NOT "RUP-A-PUM PUM"! Just to save an avalanche of Christmas cheer from falling on me----. I am searching for lyrics to a song which I presume was written in the first half of the twentieth century. The opening lines go --
Dressed up in your little soldier's clothes; Little drummer boy, climb on your Daddy's knee, Rest your weary head in sweet repose." |
