I remember seeing video footage of him playing goal for the Boston Bruins. He invented one of my favourite team names The Newfoundaland Newfs. Quite a guy, I used to love seeing him on Carson.

One death I didn't mention but who was a great loss today also was Edward Said. He was the first to illustrate the concept of "orientalism," a rather corrosive way of objectifying the Other in world dynamics. Quite a good literary scholar also. Who knows, perhaps he published in Plimpton's Paris Review.

He was quite camp in a couple of the Nero Wolf mysteries on A&E. He fit that ensemble cast quite nicely.

Plimpton also provided the voice for one of the soldiers in Ken Burns' film, The Civil War. His voice may have been in other Burns films as well, but I remember that one particularly because he was so perfect for it.

A remarkable man.

How very sad. Shit. Too many people are dying. I always admired his fetching blend of adult good manners and boyish charm.

George Plimpton. An admirable person and one to emulate. He came at life with genuine curiosity. On the radio this morning I heard him described as "a real life Walter Mitty, but he didn't just fantasize, he went out and did it, then told people what it was like and what he had learned."

Curiosity is one of the things that makes life worthwhile.

And Robert Palmer the rock singer has died also. A heart attack I think.

George Plimpton is one fellow who managed to do just about everything in his lifetime.
