Subject: RE: Review: Don Edwards (Cowboy Balladeer) in Tole From: GUEST,pdq Date: 04 Oct 03 - 01:43 PM Open Mike - Quite right, the "Appalachia to Abilene" sub-title is on both CDs. Maybe they are part of a series? I actually listen to the Norman Blake/Rich O'Brien recording more. There is a gorgeous version of the New World Symphony theme, commonly titled "Going Home". The Blake/O'Brien recording quality is exceptional. Hats off to Shanachie. Er, cowboy hats at that! |

Subject: RE: Review: Don Edwards (Cowboy Balladeer) in Tole From: GUEST,pdq Date: 02 Oct 03 - 01:22 PM Another vote for the "High Lonesome Cowboy" CD, but remember, it is a Peter Rowan effort with Don Edwards, Tony Rice, Nancy and Norman Bake as guests. There are real strong efforts by Edwards like "the Night Guard", and there classic Peter Rowan-isms in many others. Fine recording quality, also. |

Subject: RE: Review: Don Edwards (Cowboy Balladeer) in Tole From: open mike Date: 02 Oct 03 - 03:00 AM Yes! Should be a wonderful show! I have recently listened to the cd of him singing with Peter Rowan and Tony Rice and Norman & Nancy Blake: High Lonesome Cowboy. Played the Reno Blues on my radio show last time! In the liner notes, Don explains how bluegrass and western music are related: "Way back in the years B.C. (before categories), before Bill Monroe or Gene Autry we will find that their influences and inspiration came from the same tree.... Professor Bill C. Malone's wonderful little book "Singing Cowboys and Musical Mountaineers"... the introduction....stated in part that "the earliest major interest in rural folk music was devoted almost exclusively to two immensely romantic groups, Cowboy singers and Appalachian balladeers." So, with the help of our friends and kindred spirits......"High Lonesome Cowboy" came tearing out of the wilderness on its musical journey from Appalachia to Abilene." |
