Subject: RE: Tech: That's the way the cookie crumbles? From: Mark Cohen Date: 11 Oct 03 - 12:01 AM I use Netscape, but that's a good suggestion...I'll check on it. I didn't think that was it because it doesn't happen all the time; however, I often use a save-to-disk program instead of shutting down my computer, and it might be that the cookie deletion only happens on shutdown. I'll check it out. As usual, John, your technical suggestions are thorough, relevant, and clear. Mahalo! Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Tech: That's the way the cookie crumbles? From: JohnInKansas Date: 10 Oct 03 - 12:47 PM If you're using IE, and if you've "updated" it recently, some of the security settings have changed meanings. You may be set to the same medium, high, or paranoid level as before; but those levels behave a little differently with upgraded versions. One of the changes I noticed with a recent update was that IE began refusing to accept cookies from sites I'd used fairly regularly, until I "approved" taking one. There is also the option to accept a "session cookie" or a "permanent cookie." If you accept a session cookie, it should be deleted when you leave the site - or at least the next time you close IE. If you want to keep the cookie for your next visit, you have to approve taking the normal one. You may see this as the "always accept" choice when you put the site in your security box. The choices haven't really changed. It's just that you are asked to make decisions with lower "security levels" that you didn't previously have to make unless you set one of the paranoid levels. Other browsers do occasionally make updates, sometimes "automatically" without telling you; so you may see a similar change with another browser. Some of the "anti-spyware" and "anti-popup" stuff may also tag cookies for deletion - i.e. as "session" cookies. In any such case, it's usually a matter of telling the browser - or the other program - to trust the 'cat. In IE, check at TOOLS, INTERNET OPTIONS, PRIVACY tab, and click the EDIT button at the bottom. Put mudcat.org in and click ALLOW if it's not already shown with an "always allow" entry. John |

Subject: Tech: That's the way the cookie crumbles? From: Mark Cohen Date: 10 Oct 03 - 02:33 AM In the past week or so my Mudcat cookie has spontaneously disappeared at least a half dozen times. I don't know if this is related to server stuff Max has been working on, or if the problem is just with my computer. Anybody having a similar experience? Aloha, Mark |
