Subject: RE: Tune Req: Man of War Music question From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 16 Oct 03 - 10:05 AM A simple summary would have sufficed. All that duplicated chat is hard to dredge through in order to find the relevant details. A version of the song itself (text only) is in the Digital Tradition database: SAM'S GONE AWAY. That appears to be what it is usually called. It has been discussed in these past threads: Info request on Sam's Gone Away (Shanty) Lyr Req: Sam Gone Away - Shanty ... and further touched upon in Help: Calling all shanty experts! That doesn't help much with finding this specific recording, though several recordings of the song are mentioned, and a quck search via Google.com identifies more examples. However, it does establish the usual title; so now we know what the song is, if not who sang it in this particular instance. I got the impression that you had narrowed it down to a group called Hanging Johnny. Did this turn out to be a false lead? |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Man of War Music question From: GUEST,MMario Date: 16 Oct 03 - 09:29 AM well Moe - as I said, the voices sound familiar to me - and a number of the posters here are affiliated in one way or another with Mystic Seaport - which seems to have been involved in the original production of the game. It may be they will be able to put names to the voices. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Man of War Music question From: MoePerry Date: 16 Oct 03 - 09:06 AM Hello MMario! That is very nice from Mr.Happy that he search for the choirs name. Here is the cut and paste from the other forum where you can read all other informations about the song. But it is a very long text and I hope I might to copy it here in this forum? : Here the cute and paste begins: Hello! Yesterday I played: Search for the Golden Dolphin and at the end from the game, when the credits are running, there is a wunderfull music. It is an men´s choir who sings a sort of pirate song with Folk music elements. The song is Accapella and these sentences are in the song: The song begins with this text line: "Whish I was a ... ? boy..." In the middle of the song there is this text: "Whish I was a carpenter..." My question is: What is the name from the choir that sings on the credits from Search for the Golden Dolphin? I have searched at google.com but found nothing about that choir. The song at the credits from the game is very short, only 50 seconds, but the whole song is longer. Is there a Folk Music group existing, which sings a song with the above text lines, and where can I buy such a CD? Here is a link to a review from the game: http://www.quandaryland.com/2003/Search_for_the_Golden_Dolphin.htm About an answer I will be so happy, because I fall in love into the song, and really like to hear the whole song. I'd be a little surprised if the song didn't have credits in the game or manual somewhere. Have you looked there? www.cinegram.com is supposed to be the developer, but they don't even mention the game anymore. They still might be able to help. It appears it was distributed in conjunction with the Mystic Seaport Museum ( www.mysticseaport.org ). They might be able to help as well. In English, such a song is called a "sea shanty", a kind of folk music. The accents don't sound like modern American English, but that can be deceiving. I'd guess the group is from the US, or more likely the UK or Ireland. You might also want to check out The International Shanty and Seasong Association ( www.shanty.org ). They may be able to help also, especially if you have an interest in this style of music. Their website is in German, English, and several other languages. Thanks Moe. It is a pretty cool song. I've never been a sailor (except maybe in the Monkey Island games), but I can't resist learning new things! I think the word you mention as "bullet" is actually "bully" or some other UK phrases.
