Subject: RE: Tin Pan Alley/Parlor Song Sites From: GUEST,Dale Date: 22 Oct 03 - 05:44 PM Well, here are a few, as promised earlier, though I failed to put my name on my earlier post. No ID, no information about them, and too lazy to put links up for them, just a guarantee that you will find something of interest at most of them, including tons of links to other sites. Some aren't quite what you asked for, but are interesting all the same. As a few here know, I do a certain amount of music research both for enjoyment and job related, these are some of the sites I use. I have more but I have not checked them yet. These were all working as of this moment on 10/22/03. Let me know when you get through here. (Should be a few months, I'd think.) http://jimhartley.com/ http://www.garlic.com/~tgracyk/ http://home.flash.net/~duus/realaudio.html http://dismuke.org/ http://www.huapala.org/ http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/4264/ http://www.2multiples.com/hotdance/recordings.htm http://www.tinfoil.com/archive.htm http://www.swazoo.com/ http://www.jabw.demon.co.uk/ http://home.earthlink.net/~rbotti/music2.htm http://phonozoic.com/ This one deserves special mention. It has been around a long time, and has MANY links to other sites, including most of the above. The They used to have a long list of individual links to songs, but a reorganization of the site ended that, it seems. Click on the listen to free historic sound recordings online link for more leads than you likely have time for at the moment. One note, it isn't updated all that often, so you might run into a few blind alleys. No matter, it's still a valuable resource. Take their suggestion and check out www.mp3.com |

Subject: RE: Tin Pan Alley/Parlor Song Sites From: Kaleea Date: 22 Oct 03 - 05:34 AM Parlor songs from how far back? Stephen Foster was a fellow who was The, or one-of-The First in America to decided that he would make a living composing songs for the purpose of folks all across the country gathering around the Piano (or other various instruments) in the Parlour to sing the latest songs--preferrably his. "Etheopian Minstrel Songs" were popular in his time, & he wrote several such as "The Old Folks at Home" -- "Way Down Upon the Swannee River, Far, far away . . ." There are many websites devoted to his Music. I believe there was a PBS TV special about him & his Music. Of course, Tin Pan Alley was later on, but it was about selling sheet Music of songs & instrumental pieces to the general population as a form of entertainment--songs/pieces which would hopefully become popular for muking music in the Parlour--thus "pop" Music. Imagine a song so popular that it sweeps across the USA from coast to coast withOUT planes, Movies, radio, TV or even Victrolas. It happened with some of Stephen Foster's songs. Now THAT'S a Parlour Song! |

Subject: RE: Tin Pan Alley/Parlor Song Sites From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Oct 03 - 02:38 AM In another thread, somebody linked to a song at http://parlorsongs.com. There are songs available for free, but you have to look. Click on the current issue and take a look around. Most Mudcatters know about the Levy Sheet Music Collection, and the Library of Congress American Memory Collection, but I thought I'd add them for completeness. -Joe Offer- |
