Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song my mother sang...circa 1915-20 From: Joybell Date: 08 Nov 03 - 06:59 PM 2 Feathers, Was "The Skeleton in Armor" "Alonzo the Brave and the Fair Imogene"? I love that song. Made popular by the great Sam Cowell in the mid 19th Century. I rarely find anyone who will sit still long enough to listen when I sing it. You have given me hope. The nursing-home is only about 50 years away if I live as long as your Mum. Joy |

Subject: Lyr Add: CHILI BEAN. EENIE-MEENIE-MINIE-MO. From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Nov 03 - 12:18 PM The following lyrics are transcribed from the sheet music at The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music: CHILI BEAN. EENIE-MEENIE-MINIE-MO. (Words by Lew Brown. Music by Albert Von Tilzer. 1920) VERSE 1: In the land of Eenie meenie minie mo, Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! not long ago, Lived a girl called Chili, and the fellows loved her so. They loved her so! They loved her do re mi fa sol. They were a lot of little profiteers who came from near and far. They loved the um ta da She played on her guitar. Ev'ry night in the pale moonlight they gathered 'neath the stars, And as they formed a ring, They all began to sing: CHORUS: Oh, you lank and leany Chili Beanie eenie meenie mo, You know we love you so. We love your ja da um ta da da. Our lives won't be so dreamy if you let us go. You think we're full of blarney. We're full of Chili Con Carne. Chili Bean said, "Boys, I'm green. I don't know what you mean. You know that I'm so slow. What you want I do not know." They said, "Now listen, Chili, dear; Oh By Jingo sent us here, You lank and leany Chili Beanie. We'll have a lot of little eenie meenies. We'll feed them all on wienies, eenie minie mo." VERSE 2: Now this girl called Chili had a lot of dough, Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! she loved it so. But she was so silly, she let the fellows know, She let them know, That she had do re me fa sol. When all the little profiteers found out, they went to Chili Bean. They said, "From what we've seen, You'd make a dandy queen." Chili said, "You can go ahead. when do I reign supreme?" They said, "For what you've got, We'll crown you on the spot!" [The other site that Noreen linked to has a second chorus that isn't in the sheet music. I've made a few corrections to make the spelling consistent with the sheet music:] CHORUS 2: Oh, you lank and leany Chili Beanie eenie meenie mo, You know we love you so. We love your ja da um ta da da. Our lives won't be so dreamy if you let us go. The reason we're so frisky: We're full of homemade whiskey. Chili Bean said, "Boys, I'm green. I'm only sweet sixteen. I'm puzzled as can be. Tell me what you see in me." They said, "By Gee, by Gosh, by Gum, Jingo put us on the bum. Eenie meenie minie mo. Once we get you by the toe, We won't ever let you go, Just because you've got the dough, You lank an leany Eenie meenie Sweet and creamy Chili Beany Teenie weenie Eenie minie mo." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song my mother sang...circa 1915-20 From: GUEST,2 Feathers (and I'm NOT a guest!) Date: 05 Nov 03 - 11:40 PM Found the Chili Bean song, thanks Noreen. Sorcha, yes, Mom sang all the time. She spent the last few years of her long life at the Daughters of Israel Geriatric Center where she entertained her fellow residents at the drop of a hat. She also liked to impress people by reciting Longfellow's poem, "The Skeleton in Armor" - all 24 verses of it, with dramatic interpretation and gestures. There's no point in listing Mom's songs; I'd be at it day and night forever. |

Subject: Lyr Req: Song my mother sang...circa 1915-20 From: GUEST,Two Feathers Date: 05 Nov 03 - 11:01 PM Mom sang every crazy song you could think of. I thought these lyrics were part of "Oh, By Jingo" but they are not on the sheet music (Levy Sheet Music). These words were part of the song: "you think we're full of blarney; we're full of chili con carne" First time I can't call Mom and ask. She left us April 2 this year, 101 years old! What a lady. Full of music and fun. |
