There is a folk version in "Texas Folk Songs," Owens, revised edition, 1975. I am trying to find it.

I thought this would be easy, since my grandmother sang a version of the song. Haven't found it yet.
"Pilgrim," Southern harmony no. 150, has the idea but in much extended form. Here are two verses:

We have a howling wilderness,
To Canaan's happy shore,
A land of dearth, and pits, and snares,
Where chilling winds do roar.
But Jesus will be with us,
And guard us by the way;
Though enemies examine us,
He'll teach us what to say.

The pleasant fields of paradise,
So glorious to behold,
The valleys clad in living green,
The mountains paved with gold;
The trees of life with heavenly fruit,
Behold how rich they stand,
Blow, gentle gales, and bear my soul
To Canaan's happy land.

One of the verses from "On Canaan's Happy Shore," but it may take a bit of looking to find the right lyrics.

Had I but wings I'd fly away.
Where sorrows come no more,
Where angels wait in bright array,
On Canaan's happy shore.

Will look further.

It's the title of a book by Rose Wilder Lane, daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder. It predates the "Little House" books and sort of tells the same story in one volume, from the point of view of Charles and Caroline (who are renamed in later editions; I have a second ed.)
Supposedly it's an old-time song or hymn. The only words I have are:
Let the hurricane roar!
It will the sooner be o'er!
We'll weather the blast, and land at last,
On Canaan's happy shore!

I'd also like the tune. Google only comes up with references to the book. Anyone?

Allison
