Onliest is a Tennessee word. Of course it means only.

Mother Maybelle Carter's version has some minor differences in wording and in the sequence of verses:

(This might be the only time I have run across the word "onliest" outside a Snuffy Smith comic strip.)

SWEETER THAN THE FLOWERS

Just as far as I can remember,
She'll remain the rose in my heart.
Mom took sick along in December.
February brought us broken hearts.

The reason we've not called a family reunion,
We knew she wouldn't be there.
But since we've thought it all over, Mama,
We know that your spirit is there.

CHORUS: No, no, I can't forget the hour.
You're the onliest one, Mom, sweeter than the flowers.
No, no, there's no need to bother.
To speak of you now would only hurt Father.

It looked so good to see us together,
But I had to look after Dad.
Oh, Mom, when I passed by your casket,
I didn't want to remember you dead.

They all gathered round. I stared at their faces.
All heads were bowed mighty low;
But that was the one time we all had to face it,
Though it hurt us so bad, you know. CHORUS

Oh, no, Mama, we'll never forget you
And someday we'll meet you up there.

The recording you speak of was written by Rouse-Burns-Mann, and recorded by "Moon" Mullican on King Records. It's still on the jukebox, now as a CD. We still have the original vinyl 45.

I learned this one from Roy Acuff back in the 40's

I need the lyrics to a song that was on the jukebox of the "City View" tavern or cafe in Mt Adams (Cincinnatti)Ohio, 70's and that.

Title is believed to be "Sweeter Than The Flowers"

Remembered lyrics are;

We all gathered round, we sat at the table, all heads were bowed mighty low.
But that was the one time we all had to face it
But it hurt us so bad you know
Cho.
Oh no, I can't forget the hour, your the only one mom, and sweeter than flowers. It's old, I don't know 40's 30's.

Help if you can.
Carl Beason
