Subject: RE: Radriano and Chanteyranger band name From: Charley Noble Date: 03 Feb 04 - 08:39 AM CR- How about just "Port & Starboard"? You could be dressed in red and Radriano in green, or the other way around. And at pub sessions you could light up at appropriate intervals. Of course you'd have to remember which side was which, and whether your brow was the bow or your stern...BG Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Radriano and Chanteyranger band name From: radriano Date: 29 Jan 04 - 03:02 PM Ahem! I think we will be perfectly capable of choosing a name for ourselves. This whole process started out as a joke at the SFFMC New Year's Camp. I've enjoyed the chuckles and must admit that some of the questionable band names came from my own demented sense of humor. In fact, chanteyranger and I have decided on a contest. Whoever can reach the top mast yard first gets to choose our name. But please, nobody say anything about the hog grease, okay? |

Subject: RE: Radriano and Chanteyranger band name From: Charley Noble Date: 25 Jan 04 - 10:20 AM Now I've been saving this one for a really special nautical group, harvested from the Patrick O'Brian sea novel series: "Kicking up Bob's-A-Dying" (what the sailors are likely to do after going ashore in Sailortown) May work better for a nautical dance band. Oddly enough I can find no reference for this phrase in my web searches, other than it's frequent use in O'Brian's novels. I suspect it may be the colorful name of a traditional country dance tune that caught his attention while he was doing his background research. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Radriano and Chanteyranger band name From: Charley Noble Date: 24 Jan 04 - 09:11 AM Still like "Chantey-Ano" but then there's: "Full & By" (steering as close to the wind as possible) "The Barbary Coasters" (should also go well at Specs) "Shanghai-Lows" (sounds like an early acapella rock & roll group) "Deep Six" but you'll need to add some members Too bad there's already been a "Donkey's Breakfast" (WA) although the name may be retired. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Radriano and Chanteyranger band name From: GUEST,Melani Date: 23 Jan 04 - 06:35 PM "The Flakes" would certainly be appropriate, but I'm afraid most people wouldn't get the nautical connection... "Bilge Brothers" works well. I can hardly wait to see WHERE you're going to be getting gigs with names like that. |
Subject: RE: Radriano and Chanteyranger band name From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Jan 04 - 06:21 PM "Baggywrinkle" is taken (UK) "Paddy Westers" is also taken (ME) But how about: "Mollymauks" "Randy-Dandy-O's" "Roller-Bowlers" "Shallow Brownies" "Whalloping Willi-O's" Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Radriano and Chanteyranger band name From: GUEST,shanghaitad Date: 23 Jan 04 - 03:15 PM Oh, I like "Oosiks". Especially if you do a sesh up at Specs in N. Beach, where they have one (or used to), behind the bar, for clubbing patrons who aren't drinking. By the way, how about "Clubbing with Seals"? (You get the Jack London/Sea Wolf thing there). "Bay City Rovers" might sound a bit to much like "Bay City Rollers". Chanteyranger may have to keep reminding people its not a tribute band. Hog-Eyed Men Yerba Buena Boys |
Subject: RE: Radriano and Chanteyranger band name From: GUEST,ClaireBear Date: 23 Jan 04 - 01:37 PM On a whim I just went to Altavista's English-to-Italian translator, which translated "the Leghorn foghorn" to "La sirena della Livorno." Sorry, Brass Monkey(s) and Dogwatch are taken (although, Peter, you could always name your band "Dog Star" so the three Bay Area nautical bands would be Dogwatch, Starboard Watch and Dog Star -- that has a certain appeal to my twisted mind). But seriously, folks... Heart of Oak Stout-Hearted Men Red Right Returning The Sailors' Rest Ketch as Ketch Can Hullaballoo Belay The Bosun's Whistle The Duck Jibers Slumgulleon The Downwinders Master and Commander Compass Rose Kelpenhorn Scurvy Crew The Poxy Doxies (but you'd need gender changes) The Ship's Biscuit Occasional Orchestra ...I could do this all day, But I'll spare you. "Flotsam and Jetsam" has always been one of my favorites. I would steer away from any name that includes "sheet" or "seamen," avoiding nervous giggles. Then, let's see, what other names surface or sink: The Sea Slugs (nautical punk band) The Afterguard (those who serve on the poop deck) Roll & Go (sorry, that one's taken) The Dog Watch ("This chanty group should be curtailed!") Catspaw (Spaw should like this one but it really means a breath of fresh breeze on a calm day) The Bilge Brothers (worst one yet!) Shanghaied (sorry, already taken by folks in Portland-West) Bucho Mates (another pair of bruisers to be paired with their female counterparts "Bosum Buddies") Let's not hurry this process.
