Subject: RE: Review: Hissyfit: A Fish out of water From: John Routledge Date: 20 Feb 04 - 05:50 PM Summary - A very enjoyable CD - Buy one!! Have now played A Fish out of Water many times and the enjoyment increases with each playing. The material is very varied and for once I tended to prefer the newer material much of which was written by Linda herself. It is difficult to overestimate what a wonderful selection of songs there are on the CD Overall there is a wonderful feeling of musicality which to use Jeri's words "shines through the whole album" When Linda and Hazel sing together "live" the atmosphere is generally electric and much of this has transferred to the CD on many of the tracks. The CD will be a revelation to those who have not heard them sing before Several tracks really stand out particularly THIEPVAL (words by Micca) Octavius, Northern Tide, and inevitably Spare Hand and Luckiest Sailor both written from Linda's personal experience. I have no doubt that I will be enjoying this CD for a long while to come - Congratulations to all concerned. |

Subject: New Hissyfit CD From: GUEST,Chris Date: 12 Feb 04 - 04:02 AM Hi there, I've tried to find the proper thread where people have been reviewing this CD but have had no luck. The CD I am referring to is 'a Fish Out of Water' and if you hav'nt heard it yet I strongly recommend that by fair means or foul, you get your hands on a copy. I am doubly blessed with hearing Linda and Heather regularly at Nellies Folk Club, where their beautiful songs can be heard in an atmospheric setting. Seriously, the harmony that those two possess is unrivalled in the East Yorkshire area and when I let some of my friends on the wider folk circuit hear it, I expect there to be a migration! Chris Post moved from second thread. Found this thread by typing 'hissyfit' in the filter, setting it to 7 days and clicking 'Refresh'. --JoeClone |

I'll let you know if that isn't possible but in the meantime hang on to that other copy. I can still look at the case anyway :-)) Rog |

Subject: RE: Review: Hissyfit: A Fish out of water From: Jeri Date: 04 Feb 04 - 05:44 PM It just arrived today, and I'm on my 3rd time through. The short review is: if you like traditional English music and beautiful new songs with an older flavor, The arrangements and harmonies are wonderful. The songs sound original, but gently, like something you'd swear you've heard somewhere before. Most sound like instant classics. You know - the songs many folks will be talking about in a while and singing a bit later on. This is a stunning collection of songs, consistently masterfully written and beautifully arranged and performed. Linda, thanks. Yes, it sounds a bit 'home-grown', but the quality of the music shines all the more for that. |
Subject: RE: Review: Hissyfit: A Fish out of water From: Linda Kelly Date: 04 Feb 04 - 04:24 AM Yes Pierre - you did leave it in the Monk's so I swiped it back! I will get Hazel to drop you off a copy ,mate. Thanks for your lovely comments. |
Subject: RE: Review: Hissyfit: A Fish out of water From: The DeanMeister Date: 04 Feb 04 - 03:31 AM I think they liked it, ladies....! Did I leave mine in the Monks on Sunday? I have a feeling I did. Haven't seen it since it was on the table after Linda gave it to me. Oops. |

Subject: RE: Review: Hissyfit: A Fish out of water From: GUEST,Skipjack K8 Date: 03 Feb 04 - 08:23 PM Interest was shown in spades in Portaferry, ladies, so you'd better get your stall out and get flogging it. I had at least two enquiries, but I was too ratted to remember who from. And I'd like one, being a prospective deckie-learner out of Lowestoft who didn't have the guts to go. |

Subject: RE: Review: Hissyfit: A Fish out of water From: GUEST Date: 03 Feb 04 - 08:01 PM Well, you all beat me to it! One word says it all; stunning. The voices complement each other perfectly and it's so difficult to pick a favourite - though Octavia is simply spine tingling. Apart from the sheer musicianship throughout John (harpmaker) has put a great deal of TLC into the production of the CD. Get your orders in quickly folks, as I'm sure copies will move fast. |
Subject: RE: Review: Hissyfit: A Fish out of water From: Micca Date: 03 Feb 04 - 07:48 PM I just realised I posted this without re-setting my cookie so the CatsPHiddle at the top of this thread is actually Micca!! I put a copy in the Mudcat Raffle, (for which Portaferry and Fib.Mattock are becoming infamous) and it was won by Sorcha(PeterK's daughter) |
Subject: RE: Review: Hissyfit: A Fish out of water From: Linda Kelly Date: 31 Jan 04 - 05:26 PM And I would like to thank Harpmaker for his fabulous production -we were really really impressed by your patience dedication and edless cups of tea. It was a real pleasure working with you. Roger -we sold the mike and stand as we had run out of teabags. |
Subject: RE: Review: Hissyfit: A Fish out of water From: harpmaker Date: 31 Jan 04 - 03:27 PM My father came to visit me the other day, as he used to work in the fishing industry, I thought he would like to hear this cd. Well,, when the track 'luckiest sailor' was playing, you could see he was visibly moved as he listend to the story in the song. He told me that he knew the 'Peridot' and some of the people that sailed on her, and remembers her going down. I told him to take the cd home so my mother could have a listen. The following day she rang me to say how much she enjoyed it and said when 'Octavious' came on, it made her cry! I would like to thank Linda & Hazel, Val & Mike. This cd really touched me & my folks. |
Subject: RE: Review: Hissyfit: A Fish out of water From: Morticia Date: 31 Jan 04 - 12:11 PM Finally listened to this....all my cd equipment appears to be having a nervous breakdown. It is Bloody Marvellous!! I knew it would be as Linda and Hazel have the loveliest voices I've ever heard but this was the first time I'd heard some of the songs Linda has written and they are stunning....especially my little fat uncle's Thiepval....pure magic! Run, don't walk to get this, folks....you won't be sorry! |

Subject: Review: Hissyfit: A Fish out of water From: Catherine Jayne Date: 30 Jan 04 - 02:14 AM This is the Duo of Linda Kelly and Hazel Ritchings (that were so wonderful at last years Yorkshire gatering) and is a CRACKER. The Harmonys are amazing and the song selection excellent witha mixture of Traditional and some of Lindas (increasinly known and performed) songs included. The Track list is Northern tide North Cape Calling Thiepval broomlee Lough Ye Banks and Braes Gallows Waltz Three Drunken Maidens The Maiden and the Rose Luckiest sailor Farewell to Tarwathie Sparehand Octavius Even if they hadn't included a song I co-wrote (*grin*) I would recommend this CD especially if you like the wonderful blending of two female voices in Harmony this is one for you!!!! |
