I agree but the thing is I don't know what album it is and what singer. I got it form a compilation made from cd's from the pub I used to work in. It was meant to be played in the pub, easier for the barman you see.
It could also be Desi Wilkinson in case I'm getting names and voices mixed up, but somehow I don't think it's him.
I'll have a look thanks for the info

Celtann

Guest: Does the question mark in the thread title imply that you aren't sure that Andy Irvine sang this song? If it wasn't him, do you have any other guesses who it might be?

Andy Irvine's website doesn't mention any song called GENERATIONS.

AMG - All Music Guide lists about 40 recordings of something called GENERATIONS, but Andy Irvine isn't there. You might look over the list and see if any other names ring a bell.

It might help to know the exact name of the performer and album.

Dear people this is a very special song, If anyone knows the rest of the lyrics that I'm missing.....I'd be grateful.

Generations

I came to Dublin in 1964, there I met a man who told me what had gone before
Of strife and fife and living life and how it used to be
Of Irelands sons and daughters and their place in history
He told me of Wolfe Tone in 1798
Robert Emmet in 1803 and how he met his fate
Then Daniel O'Connel Young Irelanders…………….love?
They rose up in '48 all such very brave men

And there was war and blood and death of men we loved
Families left…………
Men with guns side by side with sons
Killing and dying for what they believe for generations to come

The famine came in '45 and took two million head
The Fenians rose in '67 sooner or never they said
Parnell, Davitt and Home rule a revival of Irish (tongue?)
But then in 1914 all hell went to kingdom come?

And there was war and blood and death of men we loved
Families left…………
Men with guns side by side with sons
Killing and dying for what they believe for generations to come

Pearse and…..Connoly they rose up in '16
A war of independence followed at treaty soon was seen
Yet still there came a civil war and friendship did reside
Then all hell broke loose again in 1939

The united nations in '55 was served in foreign lands
Unrest broke out in the North above, o Lord will it ever end
You and me are simple folk we're people mighty fine
Make friends with others around the world, 'cause looking back in time

There was war and blood and death of men we loved
Families left…………
Men with guns side by side with sons
Killing and dying for what they believe for generations to come
