Very sorry to hear this. Mike was one of a group of us who started to put together the Midwestern regional Folk Alliance get-togethers. His enthusiasm, ideas and encouragement were much appreciated, and will be sorely missed.

I'm sorry to hear of his passing. I'd sometimes run into him at Folk Alliance, and it was always an interesting chat. But I neverr didd make it to the U of Chiicago festival.

I remember the year the fest had street kids doing their break dancing buskers routine.

The announcer said, "... and in our every expanding definition of folk, ..."

I went every year from 1971 until I   left town in the mid-80's.

My thanks to this person I didn't know for making it happen.

I was sorry to hear about Mike's passing. He had had us perform on his Treasures of the Isles show and was a gracious host. RIP.

Mike Fleischer, who was president of the U. of Chicago Folklore Society and the behind the first University of Chicago Folk Festival in 1961, has passed away while on vacation with his wife in the Virgin Islands---of congestive heart failure. Mike was host of "Treasures From The Isles" radio show on WDCB in the Chicago area.

I just got this notice from Dave Humphreys. My condolences go out to Mike's wife and family. The festival he started is still going strong. It's the most traditional festival in the USA---my personal favorite and the place where I always recharged my bateries.
