That was fun looking at Mark Gregory's site, seeing (and hearing in some cases) some of John Warner's and John Dengate's songs, as well as lots of others I had forgotten about. We do a fair few of them in the Solidarity Choir too.

I just had to retrieve this gem by John Warner:

Texan John
A song by John Warner©John Warner 2003

Tune: Wolverton Mountain

George W. Bush took Johnnie Howard
To his Texas Ranch for a good weekend.
And said George Bush to Johnnie Howard,
"You're all this boy needs as a friend.
Oh Johnnie boy, you're almost a Texan,
Here's all my Stetsons, try one on for size"
Well Johnny tried one, it fitted neatly,
From his shiny dome down to his thighs.

George Bush may be a long, tall Texan,
John Howard only a pimple on his bum,
But he sold Australians out for oil and power
Now it's time we fired George Bush's chum.

Well little John crawled out from under,
Looking a little wan and pale,
He said "It's better than my squatter's special,
That makes me look like a roofing nail."
Then said George W., "take it home and keep it,
It'll suit you fine if you just grow a bit."
Said little John "My head's still swelling,
If we bomb Pyongyang it will grow to fit"

George Bush may be a long, tall Texan,
John Howard only a pimple on his bum,
But he sold Australians out for oil and power
Now it's time we fired George Bush's chum.

So if you are waiting at the Sydney airport
And a hat on legs should pass your way,
It's just John Howard wearing his new Stetson,
His buddy's gift from the USA.
We who protested while he dragged our nation
Into Iraq to our shame and disgrace,
Will take, perhaps, this consolation
That with that hat, we can't see his face.

George Bush may be a long, tall Texan,
John Howard only a pimple on his bum,
But he sold Australians out for oil and power
Now its time we fired George Bush's chum.

We don't care about wee John Howard
And his cowboy hat collection,
We're gonna flatten Johnny Howard
Come the federal election,
He might be George Bush's buddy
But his future looks quite muddy,
The door is open, Johnny Howard,
And your exit rocket powered
As this record keeps revolving
Picture Johnny Howard dissolving.
If that thought should ease your pain,
Sing the chorus once again:

George Bush may be a long, tall Texan,
John Howard only a pimple on his bum,
But he sold Australians out for oil and power
Now it's time we fired George Bush's chum.

Notes
Many thanks to John Warner for permission to add this song to the Union Songs collection.

On the 4th of May, 2003, George W. Bush told John Howard he was "Almost a Texan" on the occasion of a reward visit to his Texas ranch.

John Warner thanks Robin Connaughton for a number of excellent suggestions, particularly the roofing nail.

thanks for the link, Mark, I've bookmarked it.

The songs on this site are mainly Australian & a lot were written in the last few years due to the current political climate here.

Mark Gregory's Union Song site

Anyone got any others?

Here's a new (to me, at least) collection of political songs, based at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland: The Centre For Political Song. It includes a number of songs by Mudcat's own Larry (Lorcan) Otway, a/k/a InOBU. I found out about it from my friend Cassandra Sagan in Portland, whose song "No Chimp Left Behind" will soon be included on the site. (It's the theme song of her book, No Chimp Left Behind, which I hope you'll forgive me for plugging here.)

Aloha,
Mark
