Yes, rather sad.

The problems were firstly, financial. Last year's grant for £4500 from the Arts Council was not renewed, so the organisers would have had to foot the entire bill themselves.

Even this might not have been fatal, but then the venue would have restricted the numbers able to attend. Glossop Town Hall has a capacity of only 200. (Last year, a marquee at the Rugby Club allowed 300 to attend). This limit on the audience would have meant that the revenue would not have been able to meet the costs.

And finally, some of the performers reported to be asking for unacceptable conditions.

Oh, dear.

The event has been cancelled, due to funding problems. I was prevented from posting this news earlier, due to the Mudcat's own headache.

From the Glossop Advertiser, June 16th:

"Cancelled Festival gets the Blues"

"Organisers have pulled the plug on the Glossop Folk and Blues Festival.

"The three-day event was due to take place at the Town Hall this weekend, with non-stop music, including folk singing sensation Dick Gaughn ..."

"But despite the success of the festival, which was first introduced last year, problem after problem has meant that the event has had to be called off...

"[Organiser Sean Wood] said, 'We have salvaged Folk Idol, though, so everyone can come along to that instead.'. Folk Idol takes place at Glossop Rugby Club on Friday 17th June, from 7:30 pm, and the winner takes away a cash prize. Ring 01457 853164 for information."

The Lift Global Music Festival, due next month, is a completely separate event, and is not affected by the loss of the Folk and Blues Festival.

Being organised by Sean Wood of the Curragh Sons, to take place at Glossop Rugby Club on 18th, 19th and 20th of June.

It will include a "Pop Idol" style contest for folk musicians. The entrants as of last Thursday included four well-known names (Ann English,Garron Frith, Dylan Owen and Geoffrey Teruel from the US).

Full details at http://www.curraghsons.homestead.com/festival.html. Entry is £3 for Friday and Saturday, £5 for the entire weekend.

Glossop Rugby Club is near the village of Charlesworth, about 15 miles from Sheffield and 12 from Manchester, in rather pleasant countryside. There will be free camping facilities.
